Was reading a one of those magazines on the plane whilst coming back from Kenya and discovered a number of alternative fuel powered vehicles, including this beast :O I cant see it going very fast tbh, but its a cool step towards greener energy sources, pretty cool look to it also https://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/03/env_hydrogen_fu.php

this is soo old I remember talking about it a year ago,

heres what I think I said

thing is it weighs in <100kilos , which means they have 100 kilos to play with to increase performance , since no matter what manufacturers tell us bikes weigh in around 200 kilos wet.

snip

and who says its green? , currently its probably WORSE than petrol, why? , to produce hydrogen we use electrolysis on water , electrolysis is highly useful for say refining titanium of aluminium , but is HIGHLY energy intensive , since we still burn coal for electricity the pollution is not reduced it is just displaced,

rather than C02 coming out your tail pipe it comes out a big chimey in a nearby powerstation.

unless like Honda Island in Japan (I don't know the real name but is has a huge Honda tech facility there) where hydrogen is produced by hydroelectric power tapped into underground rivers.

added to the fact that hydrogen does not have the same energy density as petrol you need lots of hydrogen = lots of electrolising water.

i think a bio diesel(chip fat lol ) bike would be better i think for a petrol alternative . Diesel bikes already exist and wont need much if any ajustment to run on bio diesel and i belive you dont need to process the oil much

oh and very few emissions apparantly

its good that companies are moving forwards towards green power but untill they design a "clean" engine that is as powerfull or nearly as power full as current petrol engines i wont be convinced, i keep having visions of transport in the future being designed for just 2 things which will probly be getting from A to B and getting there slowly, which for me does not turn me on as it be.

A bit OTT but turbines can run off diesel or bio diesel

although you need $150,000 to buy a y2k
but if your wanting a fast bike which is fossel fuel freehttps://www.marineturbine.com/motorsports.asp

PostPosted: 12:39 - 07 Aug 2006    Post subject: Re Fuel cell bike Reply with quote

I met the guy who has headed up the design team on a fuel cell bike (it may be this one) He is the same guy who invented the cordless kettle and had a programme on designing bras on Channel 4 a year or 2 back. He said that it could do 60 mph and had a range of 125 miles.

The fuel cell was removed when running out and plugged into a device that looks like a PC hard drive box over night. You poured a pint of water in the top and then overnight it works his magic to recharge its self. He also said that the fuel cell could also be used to power an outboard motor, lawn mower, whatever really.

I know its not quite my gixxer 750 but this type of thing will hopefuly make a difference and therefore leave more petrol for us to burn !!

Was it called CityBike or something like that?

Zero

cus it only releases the same amount of C02 which is absorbed during its growth as a plant before being coverted to oil , thouh SVO is pointless these days it has so much tax on it , diesel is cheaper (if usd legally ie registerd to pay tax).

cept that Hydrogen has a lower energy content than petrol or diesel hence v crap MPG of hydrogen and that Hydrogen is produced by carbon emitting fossil fuel burning electrolysis.

Itchy, can't be the same one I was thinking of. The one I saw on tv about 10 years or so ago, was good for 50mph. It was blue with either yellow or white graphics, I can't quite remember.
I do remember the reviewer being fairly impressed with it, except for the fact, and I quote:- "It sounds like a milk float".

maybe they changed it to make licencing laws easier leccy bikes = no helmet (recommended though) , no licence no tax no MOT and no insurance , to some people this is a huge advantage.

I'm seriously considering one, if the price is reasonable when they come out. Just got an instictive hatred for the oil companies now...

Not quite zero, as you still have to grow the plant, harvest it, transport the crop to a processing plant, process it, and distribute the final product.

Current agricultural methods means 10 joules in oil are used for every 1 joule of food put on our plates. I'd expect figures for bio diesel production to be similar.

And this hydrogen bike isn't emission free. To recharge the fuel cell you plug it into the mains. Where does the electricity for the mains come from? Power stations burning gas and coal. So the emissions are coming out of a power station rather than the bikes exhaust.
