bike wont start and has no spark,no power going to the coil.i traced the live wire that fits to the coil back to this(pic)so im assuming this could be at fault.or maybe not is this the cdi unit?

That looks like a block connector from a cdi but I am not sure wheather it is the whole cdi.

That is indeed the cdi unit..

Whats it off?

Depending on whats wrong it may be repairable, if its dead then you wont make it any worse i guess..

If you take the top off it (the side where the connector isn't) very carefully with a dremmel you will be able to get at the underside of the circuit board, you can then resolder any connections to the board, if thats the problem you'll have it fixed.. had the same problem on anoher bike and it sorted it ok.. Will need to check its defenately the cause before you attack it!

Is this from that chinese bike?
If some sounds like you have the same problem i had, where its the generator. I had my coil and CDI tested and they where fine

I'm with eddclarke on that - I've seen a couple of far-east stator coils, and the soldering on them looks like it's been done by 5-year olds high on flux in a sweatshop for 1 dollar a month instead of them going to school. Oh...

cheers for the info...yes it is a chinese bike..sorry m a bit dumb when it comes to bikes what should i do?i was thinking if i found the wire that comes from the contactor next to the flywheel in the engine there should be one that puts out an intermittent charge when the engine turns over?when it hits the firing contact so i can see if its putting power up to the cdi unit.ive got a funny feeling the cdi is ok and that its to do with the inner workings, sorr i dont know the teccy names for it all.is it the stator coils that do this?and would i be testing it right by putting a tester bulb on the wire and turning the engine over and one of the wires should give me a light on each rotation.??and if this test does work and theres no light is it a big job to gt to the bit in th engine??appreciate as much info as possible as i want to get it fixed first thing the morra if possible...

I think you will need at minimum a wiring diagram and a multimeter to get any further without replacing parts and hoping for the best Sad

That box - how many wires, what colour, where do they go?

Its not a big job to get the generator out, you gotta undo the 2 large bolts going to the starter motor then the LHS engine casing needs to be undone and the generator should be stuck on the inside of that
I had to use a rubber hammer break the seal on the engine case.

If it is that that has gone, its a bugger to get sorted. Im having to buy a new part for £60. or you can send it off to get it re-wound.
If you need any help taking this part off let me know, ive done it so many times now

wiring diagram would defo help..i tryed changing the cdi unit today but still no good.double checked all the wiring connections and there all good.in total theres 5 wires coming outta the stato coils.pink.yellow.black/redstripe.green/white stripe.blue/white stripe..pink and yellow are live when i turn the engine over so is the black/white stripe.green/white and blue white no live.i opened up the casing and the 3 live wires are connected to the stator coils in 3 different places they seem to work.the other 2 wires that dont have a live go to a little black box next to the coils this has a connector on it so as the engine turns it contacts with a point on the flywheel.i took this box off and run a circuit test through it and its open (when i run a live through the green/white it comes back out through the blue white) and when i touch the switch past where it connect on the flywheel it doesnt do nothing, just stays live.i would have thought the circuit woul be dead until it passes the point on the flywheel then it would let the charge go through it???i hope u understand what im saying here im rushing cos i gotta b at work in 15 mins....how is the points meant to work should it do somethingwhen it passes the points on the flywheel,as far as i can see it should be a open circuit(no live will pass through)until it touches its point and then it should let power through for that split second that it makes contacte.t.c.which would tell the c.d.i.unit to put power to the coil at this exact time?????appreciate your time here look forward to more info....
thanks

Dave,

I don't mean to be rude, but a bit of punctuation would really help!

So it sounds like you have a 3 phase altenator (i.e. it has 3 wires going to it) and you think this is ok.

The other 2 wires and little black box are interesting. This is the pickup - when the little metal point on the flywheel passes by this box, it should signal the CDI to make a spark at the coil. What is interesting is that:

1. It shouldn't actually touch the flywheel, there should be a tiny air-gap. If it is touching, it may have worn it away and it is now broken!

2. It's is most likely a simple coil, so I think you should be able to detect some resistance across the two wires. In rare circumstances, it may be a thing called a hall sensor, but I doubt it. By "circuit test", do you mean you are measuring it's resistance?

There isn't normally any voltage on the pick-up - when the metal lump on the flywheel passes next to it, a small current is generated. The CDI detects this and triggers the spark in the coil.

Now, that's the "typical" case, it could be on your strange chinese bike it is supposed to contact the flywheel. I doubt it, though.

your right it doesnt actually touch the flywheel, there is a gap inbetween.i was trying to explain it as much as i could.
oh and sorry about the punctuation but i dont think about how i write i just write, ill try and put a little thought into it.lol
i have a multimeter which i was using to a 9volt charge through the 2 wires and passing the pickup past the point on the flywheel to see if it would change the voltage in any way.i take it this isnt the way to do it.
im at a total loss with this now as ive checked everything that would stop the live to the coil.ive bought a new coil, new cdi unit, checked all the wiring, and the only thing left is this stator coil.
would i be able to check the pick up if i put an ohm tester on it and make sure its generating something.would this tell me if theres something wrong with it?
oh and theres a little oil inside this whole casing should that be there?.damn gotta go back to work be back in about 30 mins...

What sort of tester are you using? it's not a megger is it? I'd keep that away from a bike!

Yes, you should be able to get a reading, in ohms, between the two wires going to the pickup. If you had a manual, it would even tell you the right value Smile Unplug the pickup from the CDI if taking such measurement, no need to turn the engine over.

Is the air gap for the pickup adjustable? Again a manual helps, but the gap needs to be very small.

If you can measure AC volts, you might see a very small voltage, less than 0.5VAC between the two wires going to the pickup coil when the engine is turned over. That's AC, not DC, you'll see nothing on DC.

I can probably suggest some other things to try out, but I need a clearer idea of the connections to your CDI. e.g.

CDI - green wire - pickup box
CDI - pink wire - stator coil 1
CDI - black wire - ignition barrel/kill switch
CDI - xxxxx wire - xxxxxx
etc. etc.

The "live" from the CDI to the coil is not live, it will be pulsing. Again, you might be able to see a signal on this if you measure it on using an AC Volts range.

Finally:

Before getting too far ahead of yourself, do you know if your bike is kitted out with a sidestand cutout switch?

And, just to be sure, make sure the battery is fully charged and that the kill switch is off Smile

ok m8 the batt is charged and i dis-connected the kill switch.
the pink and yellow wire go to the rectifier.from the stator coils
black with red stripe goes to the cdi from the stator coils
blue with white stripe goes to the cdi from the from the pick up
green with white stripe i cant remember where this goes now.but it also comes from the pick up...
the pick up is not adjustable where it passes the flywheel

is it normal to have oil in the casing where the stator coils and pick up are? i thought that may be a problem??

Ok, just to confirm:

Your CDI has these connections only:

black/red wire to one of the stator coils
blue/white wire to pickup
green/white wire to pickup
xxxx wire goes to coil
[yyyy wire goes to earth]

I'm 100% certain the xxxx wire exists, and I'm guessing the yyyy exists.

A further check you can make is to test the resistance between the xxxx wire and the battery -ve terminal, or any good earth point on the bike. Make this measurement with the ignition key in the ON position and again in the OFF position, post back what your meter says for each measurement. If you're unsure how to measure resistance (Ohms), ask!

There shouldn't be any oil in there, but I wouldn't worry about a small dribble.

oh sorry yes the cdi does have more wires.
it has one going to the coil but i cant remember where the other ones go.ive just finished work and its been a long day..
this is really difficult in posts its hard to explain it all..
ill try measuring the resistance on the coil the morra and post up here what it is.
but is there anything else other than the coil,cdi,stator/pick up that could be at fault?i ask because the only thing i havent replaced is the whole stator unit.these are only about 50 quid so would it be worth just replacing it with a new unit aswell?and if theres anything else that could cause this problem ill just go out the morra and buy it all and fit it...ill be honest m8 when it comes to bikes i dont really know what im doing.i really want the bike back on the road so if you could suggest anything else i could replace?surely there cant be much more left to change?

You're obviously not as tight as me - I won't replace something unless I'm 100% sure it's buggered AND I've hit it with a hammer. Twice. The problem you have is that besides the things you've listed, there is a very good chance that the fault is in the wiring itself, or some component you've not identified yet (ignition switch?). Which is why I need you to be sure where all these wires are going. Buy hey, it's your bike, time and money.

It's easy enough to test the stator coils if you want to do that, but probably best to eliminate one thing at a time, and yes, it is painfully slow this way! Cheaper than a mechanic, though Smile

Off to my pit now.

when i first tested for a spark i just pulled off the ht cap and stuck a screwdriver up there...put it agains the body and there was nothing..
well today i checked it properly as i should have done in the first place by taking the plug out and there is a spark.so i delved deeper and this is what ive found

sorry for all the trouble i was assuming too much.
its bent the valve and the pushrod, but luckily the piston is ok and the bent valve come straight outta the giude so hasnt damaged the guide.with a bit of luck i should get away with a new inlet valve, oil seal, pushrod, and head gasket.
it can only think it must have been caused by the fact that i didnt run the bike in properly.it had only done around 300 miles when i started giving it full revs.oh well as usual im learning the hard way.
really appreciate the help and advice you have both give me,and im sorry for wasting your time.

best regards
dave...

EEK!

Something horrible must have happened to the cam timing.

Good luck with that!

timing looks about right to me.i got the piston at tdc and the mark on the flywheel lines up perfectly...its got me a bit worried about puting it back together as something must have gone wrong,i just dont know what..when i put it back together ill turn the engine slowly on the kick to make sure its all timed up properly, then just hope for the best..
