I'm hearin an odd noise from the rear wheel (I think) of my CBR125... it started a week or so ago, and it sounds like my mountain bike sounded when I had an altercation with the ground and buckled the front wheel... i.e. the wheel was warped to buggery and the brake pads were rubbing on the bent bit. This hasn't had any knocks or drops though, and it wasn't doin this when I picked it up last month (it's just over a year old).

I notice it first thing in the morning when I'm clutchin or paddlin it to the front of the drive... and today, I could still hear it when I was doin about 10-15mph along the road. It's an intermittent squeakin or rubbin noise which might be in time with the revolution of the wheel (although it doesn't happen all of the time, and hasn't done it on the way home tonight). I haven't checked it out yet to see if there's anything obvious going on (like my chain cryin out for oil or summat stuck in the bits and pieces), but I wouldn't really know what to look for anyhow.

Aside of this, I'm a mechanophobe, and I'm yet to undo one single bolt on the bike. Anything involving a spanner may well end up being a job for the garage. But before I surrender, does anyone have any ideas as to what the cause might be?

Have you checked your rear brake disc?

Might need a good clean.

might be sticky brakes, go for a ride and dont use the rear brake stop and touch the back disc if its warm brakes are dragging if not then id start looking at wheel bearings or something, but cbr is new bike so that would be unusual.

Cheers. I've gotta take it to work today so I'll check both options out. I might get Himself to wheel it back and forth a little so I can get up close and see exactly where the noise is coming from.

Check Hugger too.

Oh and get a Rear Stand.
You'll need it to lube the chain.

LOL! What a great idea Very Happy

Right... well... I had a little look yesterday morning and wheeled it around and yep, it's still squeaking now an then, but I couldn't see what was causing it. So I took it to Appleyard's after work and a very nice man came out and had a look at it for me. He leant it over on its stand and whizzed the back wheel back and forth and has figured out that it's prolly due to the brakes rubbin - the disc isn't 'out' enough to see it wobblin when the wheel's turning, and the brakes don't judder at all, so it's prolly just a fraction out. Also, there's a teeny patch of rust on the edge of the disc which is prolly catching too, so I'm gonna wet & dry that off today.

He did say that both front and back brake units were very dry and an ickle bit rusty in places, like they'd been jet-washed at some point and not greased up again. He said they'd do with a taking-apart, a cleaning-up and a putting-back-together again. This isn't anything I could even guess at, I haven't the tools nor the knowledge, so I'm booking it in sometime next week and it should only take em an hour or so.

Also, it's been cutting out now an then, usually in the first 10 mins of riding, and he figures that starting it up every morning to ride just three miles to work, and then home again in the afternoon, prolly isn't enough to keep the battery topped up. So I got me an Optimizer and they're gonna fit the cable thingy to the battery for me at the same time.

I'm starting to feel that this is going become quite an expensive hobby unless I get my head around some basic repairs and maintenance...
