Bike has a new battery 6 weeks ago, problem is this every 7-10 days the bike wont start. The battery sounds flat and it wont turn the starter motor over enough to fire the engine. After a bit of trying all i get is a tick tick noise. other days it is ok and starts no problem even from cold.

Lights work ok and so does all indicators etc i suspect the alternator is not charging the battery properly hence why is so flat. or is there another possibility.? as its not all the time is happens.

All wires to and from the battery are ok and secured well, i also put on a second earth wire to ensure a good earth. If its the alternator is this a complex task to replace i have an old engine i could use for the part!

Check the starter solenoid wires. That white powder stuff can build up on them and cause that sort of problem.

Sounds like the altenator to me. The ZXR had a naff one and left e stranded many a time.

My bike would start again by jumping it, yet cut out again if the lights were turned on, or a few yards down the road. Check the bushes and belt if present as these may need changing.

That's not good, but compare your 12.5V reading to the battery voltage with the engine not running first. You might find it is very low (less than 12V) in which case the 12.5V reading might indicate that your charging system is doing a fine job of trying to keep a busted battery topped up.

'Load Test' the battery.

Voltmeter across + & - terminals.
Crank the Engine/Engage the Starter.
Read Voltage.
Should hold 10.5 11.5 volts for a few seconds and gradualy fall to lower value.
If it 'Dives' for low volts then the Battery is Goosed. (Unlikely on a New Battery)
Probably got a charging fault.
This would also knacker a good battery by Hydration Cycles etc.

Update:

Discovered the alternator joining wire clip was filthy so cleaned it. battery was 12.5 with the engine off so started up ok so far out put on battery was now a healthy 14.3 volts Thumbs Up thern i turned on the lights....

It dropped to 12.3 then put on main beam 12v then full 11.7v

now it was making sense i rode yesterday with my lights on full as it was foggy. so the alternator was not charging the battery.

So any one know why this is? is it a regulator fault?
Speaking of the regulator it was very hot in the space of 5 mins after starting.

Those lower voltages wouldn't be too unusual at idle with the lights on. Or is that what you get at 4-5000 rpm??

It does rise at the 5000rpm mark. I can only pressume its been the dirty contacts and runnig the bike all day on full beam to cause it to occur.

Ive ordered a new rectifer anyway just in case its causing the voltage flux.

Maybe its down to worn bushes not making adequate contact. Not sure whether you can buy them separate as the ZXR cam as a sealed type unit.

Rectifer was the cause.

running now on a good feed from the alternator on 13.5 will all lights on and at idle etc so all round prob fixed!.

Cost £40 for the rectifier which was the cheapest and found this on ebay(xj600 pre diversion) 5 min job to fix as its just under the left panel. Thanks to all for the input Thumbs Up

Hope some one else finds this usefull. Cool
