if you want to flash your lights, you press a button marked 'pass'

its occurred to me that the reason it might be marked pass is that while overtaking, you can whip on your main beam so that your glare in peoples wing mirrors alerts them to your presence as you pass, and then you release when you pull in.

i normally ride dipped as i think its easier for someone to judge the location of a dipped beam, but am considering doing this when filtering overtaking etc in future

what do you lot think ?

The pass button from what I understand is to be used on motorways, ie your in the fast lane, middle lane is empty and you want the twat in front to move over.

I think that when you dazzle somebody and they run you over it will be your own fault .
(im an Artic driver i have photosensitive eyes and am sick of being dazzled during the day , also main beam in daylight makes it harder to judge how far away you are and how fast you are moving)

yeah id agree with that, but im still thinking getting the guy im overtaking notice me might still be good

although if it startles them and makes them veer to the right this may be a problem

It's for giving headlamp flashes. So for example, if you are moving up to overtake someone, as well as using your indicators, you can give the lights a quick flash to alert them to your presence.

Do you have any idea how irritating and distracting that is? If you do that to me, expect to be seeing my full beam in your mirrors until you are out of my sight.

A note on the 'pass' button. It is often wired up differently to the main heradlamp circuit. I have seen several bikes on which the 'pass' button wiring is NOT protected by a fuse and doesn't pass through the lighting relay in the black box. I wouldn't use it for prolonged periods.

No, it should be done early enough so if they are going to pull out on you, they do it before you are right alongside them. Think of it as a "Here I am approaching at speed, decide what you're going to do." signal.

The highway code quite clearly states (in the UK) that flashing your lights may only be used a a hazard warning AFAIR. The most ignored rule on the roads.

No, it is a signal that you are there.

everyone knows that revving loudly with clutch in is to intimidate other road users

far more effective than a flash
