Today (in between work and family commitments) I pulled off the lower head race cup/holder (the pic shows the three parts needed to be removed, the rubber seal, lower metal seal and the BB holder).
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0350.jpg
To facilitate removal I pulled the rubber seal up and off the exisiting metal cup, this then gave me room to get a tyre lever (currently £1 each at poundland) under the cup, and apply preasure (on each side, alternatively) till it moved, then it was just a matter of pulling it up the yoke shaft. Job done.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0351.jpg
Now quicky question, how do I remove the steering lock, which needs to be removed before I send it for coating? I'm guessing I need to put the key in and retract it (just a guess as I dont have the key, but today I ordered a couple from an on-line motorbike keycutter from the number on the lock barrel) ? ____________________ XV1100, XV750

Key arrived today, and yep with the key in the lock pulled out.
OK quicky update, thought it was time I looked at the tank, oh heck what a mess.
I can't get the filler cap off, will apply number 1 BIG wrench later and see if I can budge it, the cheome has gone and they are available, so if it gets damaged so what.
Took the side chrome panels off, sadly one of the honda logo badges is missing, but hey I do have one.
It looks like someone was trying to take the rubber knee pads off as they are NOT available and known to perish, so like as rare as hens teath, but luckilly because the bike has stood ourside in over 20+ british winters (and summers!!!) they were solid lumps of rubber, stuck to the chrome side cheeks. I took them and bathed them in very hot water, and kept turning them over and over.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0356.jpg
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0357.jpg
Till the rubber parts became pliable again, then slowly they came away from the cheek, and intact.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0359.jpg
They are currently having a good wash in my industrial cleaning device (well ok the wifes dishwasher)
The left hand side cheek although pitted and rustied, actually cleaned up very well, and a short time with the dremmel and some polish, it dont look bad
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0360.jpg
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0361.jpg
This is before I wash the rubber parts.
the right hand cheek part is beyond saving, this is after I rubbed it down
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0362.jpg
Anyone got a spare Honda badge ? or Right hand chrome cheek, or I'm going to have to send this one away for re-chroming at some silly price? ____________________ XV1100, XV750

I think the rear wheel rim is beyond savlage, I think 20+ British winters (to say nothing of the last 10 WET summers) of being unloved and left out in the garden has taken its toll, and the result is CRAP, I emailed about 25 breakers over the last few weeks looking for a replacement rear wheel, and no joy (an Irish breakers on Fleabay has one, but its as bad as mine), so repair is the only solution. I did look at a few companies that offer repair/refurb on spoked wheels, but the cost makes me think DIY. I mentioned to my mother that I was going to rebuild the rear wheel (from the spokes up), and she tells me she used to rebuild my late fathers wheels on his scramblers in the 50s, so shes agreed to assist.....(not bad for 78yrs old).
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0371.jpg
This is the problem, even if I cut the crap off and took it down to the bare metal, the cost of blasting and re-chroming would be more than the cost of a new rim from David Silver. The spokes are another story, although rustied, when wiped with wire/oil they come up cleanish, and they are sound, so rather than buy 36 replacement spokes from Taiwan, I'm going to rub mine down and make good. To get the spokes out, I used penetrating oil (Parafin/3-in-1 oil mix) on the spoke nipples, applied down the spoke, and from the inside of the rim. Using a large screwdriver and a pair of mole grips, I managed to get them all to turn 1/4 turn, then added more oil, and left them for 24 hrs. Today I brought an even larger flat blade screwdriver, grounded the end down to fit exactly into the nipples and using the mole grips took every spoke out (the "TWANG" as they break free from the nipple was stunning). However before that I measured the offsets (from both sides) and took lots of pictures of the spokes, and worked out the magic pattern used to build the wheel. Brake side 6 spaces between each spoke (in the rim) and 5 spaces between on the chain side.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0372.jpg https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0374.jpg
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0375.jpg https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0378.jpg
You can get an idea of the rain/snow and frost corrosion looking at the hub, but I think the hub is doable.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0383.jpg
Eventually I got all the spokes out, and they are all 155mm in length and have the same angle where they pass through the hub so 36 identical spokes.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0384.jpg
These are the rusted spoke nipples, I could clean them up, but it would be nice to use new ones, does anyone know where I can buy new spoke nipples to fit ?

Re-assembled the handlebars, this involved getting some grey (2~1 shrink) heatshrink tubing (from internet), a new throttle cable (NOS) and two new grips, all threaded through the handlebars (that was fun), and a new rear brake switch, again NOS.

Whilst the spokes on Fleabay may look attractive, I've not had any replies to any of my emails or even managed to telephone the seller on the number provided, and looking at his feedback, I think thats one purchase I'm going to avoid...
To that end I've taken another gander at me spokes.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/IMAG0387.jpg
And I've put a small amount of gaffer tape (duct) over the threads, and inserted them one at a time into my battery electric drill (on high speed) and wrapped some very fine wet and dry paper around the spoke whilst spinning, untill the rust had been removed, the results are not "as new" but not unlike most "used spokes". I think I will further expose them to some Jenolite and see if they come up a little brighter.

Don't risk it.
You may get them to come up looking good, but think about the loads they have to take, and have taken over the years, and where they will 'snap' will be at the neck where they bend, which will be where you either don't get as much rust off, or where you thin them most getting it off, and where the major fatigue in the metal has taken place over the years, being the natural 'stress-raiser' in the component.
You have the length and bend dimensions; if you cant order by model you ought to be able to find a supplier that will supply by dimensions, if not to exact dims, a 'standard' that can be trimmed to length and threaded to suit. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I don't know why you don't go with the ebay guy, I looked at his feedback and considering the amount of sales he's going through, the law of averages says he won't have completely satisfied everybody.
For the sake of 11 quid and some serious peace of mind, I would take a punt. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Yea I might order them as you say for £11 if nothing else its a cheap source of spoke nipples...
Meanwhile (what else can you do when its snowing), I thought its time to look/strip the engine.
Easy step first, remove the gear change (lever), it was a sod to get off, the bolt sheared off, had to use a stud extractor (first time one worked correctly!!) and remove the broken bolt from the arm, before I could get the arm off the spline.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0390.jpg
Next "Just remove the screws holding the case on", yea right, 20+ years have taken there toll on these babies, had to use mole grips, impact hammer and blood and sweat (got the cuts on my hand to prove it), the last one was a swine, in the end I hammered a socket onto it, and pushed and pulled till it moved, but in the end?, yep got them all out. I'm not worried about the state of them as I have a brand new kit of stainless steel replacements already to hand. However I did stick them into a bit of card to make sure the right screws (length) will got back into the right holes.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0391.jpg
Pulled the side off, again after must tapping with a rubber mallet and gently leavering off with tyre leavers, man this thing was stuck on...
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0392.jpg
Also removed the cover to the points (Camshaft) to have a quick look, urgh my god I've seen some corroded points in my time, but these look like they have been filed with a rasp, they almost have teath...
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0393.jpg
Tomorrow when my hand has recovered enough, I'll start on the other side...
Meanwhile (Xmas post permitting) I have a full set of upper and lower gaskets and seals on order. ____________________ XV1100, XV750

Heinz 57 engine? one side has standard jap screws, and one side VERY rustied allen screw/bolts. Yet again this damn thing has fought me for every screw, and being allen headed, they just round out, had to hack them with the dremmel so I could use a slot on the impact driver.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0396.jpg
Even with the screws removed the cover was stuck fast, turns out to be a mix of old gasket and some jukky cement.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0395.jpg
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0397.jpg
Still inwards and onwards, at least now I can get at the clutch and oil pump/filter.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0398.jpg
The eagle eyed amongst you will probably have noticed it looks like some ham-fisted git has snapped one of the locating pips off the pump cover, top ones missing and the bottom one is part gone.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0400.jpg
I'm guessing the reason the cover screws were changed and the gasket repaired as someone has changed the clutch, as its in good nick, with lots of wear left in it, and the springs are all withing spec.
https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/CD175/IMAG0399.jpg

Best news of the day (apart from the fact tomorrow is winter solstice, and the days start getting longer), is the phone call I just had with the finishers. My frame and parts are all done, and being wrapped for me to collect tomorrow, and true to their word, 100 smackers....for frame, swing arm and about 12 other parts..... BARGINOUSE.

This is fascinating, you must be really jammy to source some of the parts on ebay just after they are listed! Great thread so far, can't wait to see how this looks at the end ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10
