PostPosted: 16:49 - 09 Aug 2010    Post subject: North + South Wales + North Section Rideout Reply with quote

I finally got around to organising another North and South Wales meet after the last one was a resounding success...

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=143393

Laughing

Well after a fair amount of interest from the North and Midlands sections and a few people from the Welsh section registering an interest section I was hoping we'd get a decent turnout, turned out we had 7 riders and 1 pillion on the ride which isn't too bad but still a little disappointing! Anyway, we met at Bangor Travelodge at 11am, tanked up and waited around until 11:30 in case anyone else turned up.

Benvanwell starts the day by molesting an innocent pillion... Laughing

The doomed BCF flag, lasted all of about 20 miles!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8025.jpg

The vague plan was to head down to Aberystwyth and meet the South Wales riders with a few stops on the way down and I was going to make a head start every now and then to get a few pictures.

So we headed off from Bangor just after 11:30 and headed over the A5 down into Betws y Coed.

After a quick stop in the Shell garage at Betws y Coed for a wee and a drink we headed over to Dolgellau via the A470.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8180.jpg

We made another quick stop in the Esso garage just outside of Dolgellau to re-group which coincided perfectly with the 50 mile service interval on Rob_scott92's super highly tuned CB350 Wink

CHR15 requested a picture of this car full of "slightly" overweight people and possibly all of their worldly possessions... Laughing

After a bit of a re-fuel we headed over to Aberystwyth via the A487.

Ghost

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8363.jpg

I stopped for a quick wee outside of Machynlleth (getting old with a weak bladder it seemed....) and managed to totally fluke this shot of Benvanwell going past

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8402.jpg

We eventually arrived at Aberystwyth which is where we got a bit lost looking for the promenade! I was relying on Benvanwell to lead us to the prom but he'd forgotten how to get there so we just bluffed our way around the ridiculous one way system and eventually found our way onto the prom. Any concerns about bikes being allowed on the prom were soon banished...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8405.jpg

Plenty of bikes there to look at including a Suzuki with a rotary engine (which I totally forgot to take a picture of Crying or Very sad ) and a nice pair of his and hers busas with matching identical number plates! (again, was too busy ramming chips down my throat to take a picture of them....)

Managed a picture of my chips and sausage roll and Ghost's chips and cheese though...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8408.jpg

While queuing for my chips I was approached by a lanky bald guy who turned out to be ram_doom with his pillion Nicky Jano who hadn't ridden due to smashing her coccyx down the stairs the day before! We had a bit of a catch up and meeting up with them turned the day into a bone fide meet instead of just a ride to Aberystwyth so I was happy Very Happy

CHR15, Rob_scott92, Woll, Nicky Jano, Ghost, Ram_doom, Benvanwell and his pillion

After an ice cream and quick oil top up on Rob's CB350 we headed North to Aberdyfi. I really enjoyed this coast road and wondered why I hadn't done it any more times than I already have. We stopped by the sea at Aberdyfi so CHR15 could have a quick nap...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8413.jpg

Too much riding?

My bike trying to alter the lines in case a parking warden was on the loose...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8428.jpg

CHR15 was awoken by a few quick taps of his horn kindly administered by Woll and we were on our way north heading up towards Barmouth/Dolgellau. We'd decided to go to Dolgellau and then change the route to save the guys from the North Section heading further west than they needed to go.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8465.jpg

The sweet coast road with Barmouth in the distance

Following CHR15

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8544.jpg

No time to stop to take a picture of Barmouth so I didn't stop and took one anyway!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8568.jpg

At was at this point we caught up with 2 retarded riders, one on a Pan Euro and another on an R6, what these guys were playing at I'll never know. We caught up with them doing a reasonable speed on the NSL coast road then suddenly they slowed right down to 20mph for no reason and maintaining their position in the road so Ghost who was leading our group overtook them safely. Cue them trying to chase him down... No idea what they were playing at! The rest of the group stuck behind these 2 riders for a while so I elected to head further up to catch up with Ghost which unbeknownst to me would be the last time I'd see any of the group.

Me waiting on the A470

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8603.jpg

Me and Ghost headed back up to the A470 along the coast road then waited on a roundabout just outside of Dolgellau for the others but when they didn't show we headed into Dolgellau to see if we could find them. Turned out that while we were in Dolgellau they'd already headed up towards Bala so me and Ghost headed up the A470 and turned off onto the B4212 (quite a fun road if a little fast!) to look for them.

With no phone reception me and Ghost decided to wait by a lake next to the road in case we'd passed them so we could hear them if they went past.

Looking the other way towards Bala

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8611.jpg

It was at this point I got a text through saying "meet you at the lake". Me and Ghost had already ridden passed 4 lakes to get to this one so we kind of gave up hope of finding the group again! We headed back down to the A470 as we figured the other guys would head towards Bala then off home. We stopped at a disused petrol station on the A470 (for another wee!) where I eventually got phone signal back and gave the guys a call. Turned out they'd headed to Bala and were heading home from there so me and Ghost figured that seeing as the A470 was more towards home for us we'd head back up that way.

Mine and Ghost's bikes at the old petrol station

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8612.jpg

After getting home I had dinner then pretty much went straight to bed as I was totally knackered! I clocked up around 240 miles on the day which isn't too bad and I think (hope!) everyone had a good ride.

I'd say roll on the next one but as the last one was 2 years ago I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. I'll be moving to Manchester in a few weeks so I'll be busy annoying the North and Midlands sections!

Big thanks to Benvanwell for being tail end Charlie on the day and for Ghost for leading the ride at a sensible pace when I wasn't at the front and generally for everyone that showed up! Apologies for the mix up with the group being split and I hope you all had a good day. Thanks to the summer for showing up right on cue and to ram_doom and Nicky Jano for coming up from the South despite getting lost!

For anyone interested - All photos taken on a Canon 450D with either the 18-55 kit lens (all on bike shot with this setup) or a 90-300 F4.5-5.6. The 54 on the photos is my watermark, if you re-post them anywhere please don't crop it out or I'll be sad.

Ha ha, I could post all 600 of the photos I took but they mostly look like this:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8383.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_8531.jpg

Hence taking a while to sort through them Wink

Orthodox Jews seem to love Wales. When I worked at the ski slope in Llandudno we'd have massive groups of them visiting all the time, no idea where they kept coming from.

Yeah sure, just leave the watermark on them and all is cool Thumbs Up

Glad you had a good time, was a little worried you may have gotten frustrated with us overtaking loads of stuff all the time. Wales is definitely a good place to learn about corners though!

Not at all, i did feel a little bad for slowing Ben down but that couldn't really be helped. It was good fun and practice.

Bens pillion was saying how it was nice to go for a ride where she actually got to see the scenery for once so I don't think they minded either!

Great pics - and good fun to be able to follow up on the day out.
Really disappointed that I missed this one, but a lack of funds and borderline illegal tread on the front tyre counted me out.
I'll defo make an extra special effort for the next outing!! Thumbs Up

I think it's always way better to see some of the roads that were ridden instead of just a load of pictures of bikes parked up outside various stop offs! I can imagine that Woll and CHR15 spent a fair bit on fuel for the day as well.

I did spend a bit on fuel did 289.3 miles all in all and i agreed to fuel chris bike in return for the use of his experience and feeler gauges today doing the valves on it. Tbf i filled him up twice on the same pump as me first time £25.01 second time £23 not too bad really. But then on the way back i just rolled onto the garage forecourt before the 55, i had been on reserve going into bala and managed to limp it that far. Cost me £17 to fill up then, normally only costs £14 ish.
I would organise one but not got a clue where to go besides the cat and fiddle or the horseshoe pass + lack of time to properly organise it. It would be an epic fail ending up with either just me or me a chris going Laughing

Just go wherever you know, no use trying to find new routes on an organised rideout! Only takes a few threads on a forum and you have a ride planned before you know it Wink

Snake pass, Woodhead, Holme Moss. Loads of roads around this way that are decent.
