Wasn't sure which topic to put this in so feel free to move this thread mods.

Have always wanted the engine block table that they have on Top Gear and the other month after a related discussion at work my calibration engineer said his old man had one lying around in the garden. I said how much, his said 'dunno, 20 quid?'. Result!!

A few days later he brought it to work.

After a long time on the media blaster, the block was cleaned up, measured, marked, drilled and tapped. After some fettling the pistons were level enough to mount the glass.

The pistons and rods were then blasted and everything brought home for painting.

Pictures to follow shortly and everything will make sense Wink .

Block only came with one bank of pistons.

I'm quite happy with the way it has turned out tbh.

Definitely think it looks good, but just feel a v8 should have 8 pistons on show. I'd be very happy if I could make something like that Thumbs Up

Awesome. Me and a mate have just made a small table from an old 4 cylinder Golf engine, wanted to do a V8 but could only find old Land Rover engines.

https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/tear/13650006.jpg
This very nearly bacame a coffee table.....
It had lived inside a Range Rover, until the ex missus killed it! So I took it out to 'Do the Heads'....
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/tear/13670013.jpg
The rocker covers were a bit 'Scabby'
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/072_B_001_Tear/13660026.jpg
I had the thunk, that a V8 is a bit 'Special' so ought to LOOK a bit special, especially since I was spending an awful lot of money reconditioning it's insides.... Becouse at this point, 'doing the Cylinder Heads' had become doing a complete engine overhaul, and I was a bit 'stuck' while the block was at the M/C shop being bored and the crank ground and 'stuff'... so I decided the rocker covers ought to be polished.... then I decided they still looked crap, so I'd paint them.... but that ribbing ought to be blocked out..... and THEN I got a bit 'carried away'!
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/072_B_001_Tear/13680006.jpg
And painted the sump pan... and inlet manifold... and since the carb overhaul kit arrived before the engine block was 'done'... I did the carb bodies!
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/tear/13680005.jpg
Only trouble was, the more bits I 'Did' the more it showed up the bits I HADN'T done.... so I ended up colour matching the fan, the distributor cap, every bludy thing!
Apart from the dip stick and oil filler... which I painted BRIGHT YELLOW... in the hope that the idiot woman MIGHT actually be able to find them and check the oil....
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/tear/13680070.jpg
Looked so stunning by the time I was done, I REALLY didn't want to stick it back under the bonnet of a Range Rover!
Blogged, I actually had a bloke offer to buy it to stick in a Hot-rod, where it would have been seen.... but in the end.... wound up hidden away back under the bonnet of the Blue Rangie it came out of.....
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/tear/13680076.jpg
Missus fucked off in that car six weeks later..... still miss the car......

Of course, that's the undominable Buic 213 sub-small block alloy V8 you have coffee tabled, like the 3.5 lump that was in my old Rangie.

The Top Gear V8 Coffee table, is I believe a Porshe 928 block.

If you remember, in one of the Top Gear Challenges, the three were set the task of buying a Porshe for under £2K or something, and then had to do whatever to them...... Hamster bought a 924, I think, cant remember what Cpt Slow bought, The curley one bought a 928, and pipped them with the final challenge, selling the thing to recoup costs... and he sold his as 'spares'.....

Aparently he'd had the idea from buying the coffee table in the first place and taking to the chap that made 'Designer' Auto-Furniture.....

Correct, mine is an old rover lump.

I wasn't majorly fussed about getting an exact same engine as TG, more that I just wanted to build a V8 table and pi55 the gf off by having it in the front room.

Top gear coffee table is a Jaguar V12.

https://www.record-designs.co.uk/

Doesn't use the pistons either.

I was going to try and get one that had dropped a valve or cracked a head, then cut it in half so you could see the valves and pistons working Smile

Also the VFR has a very useful way of mounting the glass top, which I think you already know about, but PM me if you want me to share with you Thumbs Up

Dunno where you are in the country Tim, but if you're even vaguely near north London these guys can make absolutely anything you can imagine out of glass - https://www.instrumentglasses.com/

They're one of those little family type businesses based in some run down looking 1930s factory units, no job's too small and they're not expensive.

Maybe a photo of your bike etched into the glass, or a bike shaped glass top?
