From poking around on the web for our trip to France in Sept, I have found that it is easy to keep costs down to about €40 a night for room, dinner and breakfast, that's about £25. Petrol in France is about the same sort of price as it is here (maybe slightly cheaper, but not much). As for the ferry, if you use the right company (there is a link in this section somewhere), it costs £40 return.

A grand should be easily enough for a two week trip. I didn't spend too much more than that on my 3week trip around Spain, and that was over 4k miles.

Btw, it's good that you have family in Lisbon, because it's a total bastard of a city to navigate around on your own. I must have spent around 5 hours riding around in circles totally lost there Embarassed

£1k is generally what I aim for, on a 2-3 week trip inc fresh tyres and oil change. If you take a tent you can save money that way too.

You can probably get away with it in France, but sites are cheap (like £5 in the Alps) and a shower at the end of a long hot day in leathers is probably worth it.

It's illegal to camp off-site in Spain, but don't know how easy it is to get away with.

Free camping is illegal in almost all of Europe (even Scotland and Wales). Just as in the UK, if you are discreet and polite with regards to your surroundings, you will probably be ok. I wouldn't try anywhere near tourist destinations or cities. If asked to move on, do so with no fuss. Be polite and pleasant, and like most things in life, you will fair well.

I would probably recommend against free camping in all but the remotest parts of western europe, but eastern shouldn't be too difficult.
