Quick Question

Right basically, ive just got my bike back from 7500 mile service, did the oil change myself so only cost me for new air filter and Spark plug, and cost me £75.68 including labour, so not earth shatteringly painful as i thought.

But one thing that concerns me is, i asked to have a fairing bolt drilled out so i could put the new one in, but ive got it back and its like they've fucked the hole up. Now can i put a smaller bolt in or what? Just i dont want my fairing flapping about like a Prostitutes Flange.

Use a longer bolt and put a nut on the back of it?

If you can change the oil and filter you could have easily done the plug and air filter yourself.

As for bolts, ask the garage for one. You asked them to do it and they didn't do it right, I'm sure they can spare a bolt if you have just spent 75 quid on a service.

Most of the £75 as labour and VAT. 53 quid per hour labour at E.S.B in Bolton.

Oil's Easy to change, just getting to the spark plug i dont have time to, whereas, oil is just take fairing half off, plastic box undo, let it drain for 2 mins, then bang a litre of oil in. 5 Min job.

I'll ask my breaker friend, sureley with all the bits of bike shit he has, he could spare a bolt.

Maybe the service schedule says only change filter every other time.
I do that anyway but tend to change the oil more frequent than they say.

or the removal of the dipstick, or the warming up of the bike, or the leaving it longer than 2 minutes, or the CAREFULLY filling up intermittantly checking with the dipstick.

Can you get a socket on it at all because I would suggest that using a good quality 1/2" drive socket on it would have the best chance of success? Tried tapping an imperial socket that is slightly smaller down onto it?

You get wobble extension bars for socket sets that are a deliberately loose fit on the drive to help you get into tight corners, maybe borrow some of these off someone?

thanks for the advice stink , I'll have a go , heh as even if I bugger it up its only a couple quid (and ego points) to go to a local mechanic who is cheap (who seems to do bike repairs more as a hobby than a business).

That on your ntv650? Assuming it's the same as the bros, I can only get a 3/8ths socket it on it using a universal joint. If you're sure you can't get a spanner on it then perhaps try moleys?

yes its me NTV650

I can get a closed ended (box?) spanner on it , and it fits fine , I can't get any sockets on it though well I can but just the socket by itself which isn't very useful.

, the spanner is almost like a socket its one of those with lots of teeth almost the same as the socket and it won't budge even a tiny bit

and I worry about trying too hard and rounding off the bolt which I'd rather be annoyed at.

As I said, try 3/8ths rather than 1/2" and see if you can get a universal joint on it.

However if you can get a ring spanner on it I don't see what the problem is. Sit down on the floor next to the front wheel and stick the spanner on pointing vertically down. After double checking that it is on the bolt head properly, give it a big kick. If it won't come undone then you're not kicking it hard enough The spanner will only round it off if you don't have it on the bolt head properly.

I'm shite at football and my accuracy is piss poor , I keep having images of kicking it with a run up missing hitting the side stand and having all 200kilos fall on me trapping me under neath.



maybe I ought to try extend the ring spanner with some tubular steel to get more leverage , thanks anyway.
