Make 100% sure it's the HD. I replaced a noisy power supply recently only to discover it was the fan on the gfx card right next to it that was the problem... ____________________ "That's it. You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college."

Colin, do the following,
1. Backup your data now!!
2. Defragment your hardisk, may be your disk is badly fragmented, so lots of seeking for data.
3. Download https://www.snapfiles.com/get/hddhealth.html or some other utility from your hdd manufacturer to see the smart messages.
What spoils a hardisk is;
1. Frequent stop/starts
2. High temperatures
My hardisks on some pcs, have run for 6 years non stop, with adequate cooling 39oC average temperature. High temperatures and it fails like in 6 months.
Hope it helps ____________________ "You don't know the power of the dark side." |

don't worry about it too much in any event , cus HDDs are much simpler to install than say with win95 , format the HDD , put it in with the jumper as master and stick in your (hooky) win2K CD and ta da it jump starts the CD drive and installs just like that , no messing with shite like the MSCD.exe thingie to have to jump start the CD drive. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. So if this noise was happening with a laptop too (probably caused by an overheating problem as the battery died a couple months ago and has been run as mains-only since and gets pretty warm underneath) and the user has had 2 blue screens of death within days of each other (and has not used the laptop since because she wants to back some stuff up next time she switches it on) is it time to buy a new laptop? ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

Some hard drives are naturally noisy. Its if the noise changes you should worry.
Also laptop hard drives will rattle when not in use if you shake them gently, this is normal.
SCSI Hard drive on the other hand make a bleeding racket all the time. ____________________ If you dont like the way that I ride.......Stop trying to keep up!!! |
