Has anyone been? I'm off there with the family in August, and I'm wondering what there is to do. I've done some research on the net, and found a place that will hire me a Yamaha XT660 -
https://www.cmgonline.com/bikes/models/Yamaha/XT660/2005/XT600X/studio/BigP/XT660X_rsf_bg.jpg
£56 a day
£138 3 days
£304 7 days
I'll be there 10 days, and I'd like to do some exploring but I'm not sure if 7 days will be worth it, the island is only 60 miles long and 30 miles across.
I also want to get some scuba diving, or at the very least snorkeling in. Despite being Atlantic shores, the Canary Islands have some decent scuba diving apparently.
So has anyone been, can they advise on anything, and do they think either of these activities are worth doing? |

Have you had your license 2 years? If not they "may" not rent the bike out to you.
Been many years ago, and tbh can't remeber that much (normal for me on holiday though ).
Scuba diving is always worth doing, especially if you haven't done it before. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

which side of the island are you on?
Playas Des Americas is where the action is at , though if you have a bike it'd be easy to go there and back cus it gets a bit like a UK city centre at night times there.
the other side is a bit crapper , it has shingle beaches instead of black sand (which burns your feet badly) but much queiter and much cheaper so it depends on what you and your family like.
I recall go karting nearby Playas des americas a parrot park , and a iffy water world park type place.
Looking back the middle would be fantastic for some proper trailie abuse , that said I'd bring some proper motocross gear since unlike trailie days in the UK , its lots of hot sharp rocks everywhere , and being impaled on one isn't my idea of fun.
Maybe you should get a massive trailie for a few days and then go over to something a bit more pedestrian for road work.
and do you have enough time to learn to scuba? or are you gonna go to a dodgy no need for lessons place?.(apparently the fitness test is being able to stay underwater and hold your breath for a minute)
oh and bring a dust mask , and some trailie style goggles there be lots of dust.
watch out for dodgy africans who try fob you off with fake designer watches , ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. See if they have a smaller trailie. A 250/350/400 4-stroke ideally, you wont be able to use the 650 to its full potential on those roads whereas you will be able to ride like an idiot on a smaller bike.
Air cooled bikes are the best bet as they will cope with running slowly in high temperatures a lot better.
When you get it, give it a THOROUGH checking over. I hired a DR350 when I went to Gran Canaria. It had no oil in it (none at all, took nearly 2 litres to get it on the dipstick) and no taillight bulb. I am suspicious that the guy at the shop knew there was no oil in it judging by the look on his face when I brought it back the next day with an additional 300 miles on it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Even if you don't intend to go off road, a small trailie might be the way to go anyway. If the roads are anything like Gran Canaria, they are narrow, very twisty and pretty rough in some parts.
Some of them are also unmetalled, especially if you venture away from the coast for a cool down and to see some greenery. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

dont talk to the african blokes, once you do that they wont leave you alone they followed us into a restaurant and sat down on the table next to us trying to sell us fake sunglasses at 40euros a pair .
The karting place is good if you get a decent kart the one i got was a proper slow one and everyone left me behind there was also a guy going round the track on a KTM supermoto and he was going quick. the water park is quite good but if you bottle out on a one of the 20ft water jumps they will start shouting it out over the PA system as they did for one woman that wouldnt do it . overall it was a good holiday as one of my mates was there at the same time so i met up with him, but if i had just bin with the family it would have not bin as good

The North of the island is mountainy and quite green, top northeast bit is the island's only golden sandy beach. If you go to the restaurant there don't order huevas, I thought it meant eggs - it does - fish eggs........
It often rains in the evenings in the North, about 10pm usually.
The Lorro Parque (parrot park) is in the North and is an OK day out, especially if you have young children. I found the dolphin and killer whale displays a bit disturbing though. There is a good Lido at Puerto de la Cruz (where we stayed).
There is a motorway thingy that runs just about all the way round the outside of the island, or you can go across the middle but it's very steep, very twisty and when you get up to the volcano bloody cold!
The capital city is quite cosmopolitan and worth a visit for shopping if you like that sort of thing. We found it better to go on the bus though cos the traffic (and parking) was a nightmare!
The South of the island is a lot drier, and the resorts are more "English".
The best thing we did when we were there was to go on one of the whale-watching boat trips, Tenerife was the only place I've ever actually seen both whales and dolphins, and it was a truly beautiful experience. The submarine trips are OK too if you want to take the whole family underwater! The South is much better for that sort of thing.
Bits of Playa des Americas are a bit downmarket, Los Christianos is nicer (although we stayed in the North and rented a Smart car for the week). Also, a lot of the accomodation is very uphill, if you're going to the resorts in the evening be ready for quite a trek to get there and back.
I liked Tenerife best of the Canaries I've been to so far (also been to Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria) and would definitely go back, but as has been said it can get a bit chaotic with music and drunks in July and August. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |
