If you cut that off just above the hanger it will end up being about 6" long
The three bolts, what exactly is on the inside that these locate into?
Whatever it is it will need removing and then re-fixing further down the can.
The one's I've seen done before are of the variety that have the end-cap wrap over onto the main sleeve and then pop-rivetted on. (the most commonly made cans at the mo are like this). I've not seen one done that is fixed from through the end cap before.
The most difficult bit usually is hacksawing the thin'ish main sleeve without deforming it. |

I need to cut this off so will need a new one.
