I've just started making tracks on reason, and I'm looking to buy a cheapish MIDI keyboard, sooooo, any reccs or advice? Since I have no real clue what I'm looking for.

Thanks you.

You need a MIDI master controller such as:

M-Audio Axiom 25, Alesis Photon X25 or a Behringer UMX-49

Expect to pay £100 upwards for anything of reasonable quality.

All of the above are USB so make sure you have a USB 2.0 interface.

maybe get something cheap off ebay to get you started and when you realise its short comings get something better if needed

i was thinking about getting one. I think a big range(lots of keys) is good but some people prefer to just have a small range

i dont really know about technical stuff

I'm just being nosey, but what genre of music are you producing. I've got Cubase and Reason's ReCycle, used to do do a bit of trance but edging towards funky house now. Thumbs Up

Never let it be said that you let the depth of your cluelessness prevent you from expanding the breadth of your ignorance.

maybe bazza is saying that in order to run a midi keyboard, you need a midi controller even if you have a midi port on a sound card

but unfortunately he is too busy being smug and superior to express himself clearly

if I am wrong baz, explain so we can learn

think about the way kickstart or G respond when putting straight know-it-alls who dont have a clue. polite and informative is the tone to aim for rather than smug and cryptic

I answered the original question politely with the relevant information.

All you needed to do was put "reason" into Google search to find out exactly what the question meant before spouting your usual uninformed tosh. If you're going to rubberneck from the sidelines, at least make an effort to understand what it is you're looking at.

FYI, MIDI ports on sound cards went out with dot-matrix printers and green screen VDUs.

Now before this ends up in F&FW, go and do your own research and post back here when you have some semblance of a clue.

a bit cheaper on ebay

so what are the advantages of a flash one like that, over a cheap one like this ?

And assignable twiddly bits as you say means more to someone who makes music.
Read the spec i guess.

TBH it depends what level your at, and what you want to get to.

Edit:- Anyway B stock stuff has been returned, for a reason.....

I wdnt mind damaged packing which is how he describes the B one

i probably wdnt use a keyboard enough to justify getting the flash one but im sure some people would

I'll post a little something later on tonight or tomorrow.
I like twiddly bits, since I tend to try and fuck around with the stock samples as much as poss to get the most I can out of 'em... so assignable twiddlies sounds good really.

Here's my very half arsed, half of a track.

You might find just using a cheapo ebay keyboard leaves you hopping back and forward to the mouse and screen for every little thing.

Using something like Reason in a bedroom jam/mix setup probably doesn't need a full-sized k/b - I'd go for the option of more assignable controllers over extra keys in that situation.

Of the ones I recommended, the Alesis has the most assignable controllers and is Reason-compatible[1], the M-Audio has 8 touch-sensitive pads but less controllers and the Behringer has 49 keys.

I'd probably go for the Alesis. Like choosing the right bike, it's horses for courses I guess.

[1] "Here are just a few examples of what the templates let you grab in real time. In Propellerhead Reason, Dr-Rex’s template allows instant access to all filter parameters, all envelope segments for both filter and amplitude, LFO, oscillator pitch, loop transpose, mod wheel assignments, and velocity settings. In Applied Acoustics’ electric piano plug-in Lounge Lizard, you can control hammer stiffness, force, and noise, as well as parameters for appropriate effects like wah-wah, phaser, delay and tremolo."

Awesome.

Thanks a lot.
