how loud are we talking guys? i mean i think my helmets pretty quiet but what would you constitute as loud? i've never had it where it hurts my ears but i've had it where pretty much all i can hear is wind, i.e. really windy days with cross winds.

It is louder than you think it is. Try talking or whistling to yourself inside the helmet when you are doing a bit of speed to get an idea.

The statistic I saw (can't remember where) was that at 70mph, the wind noise past an average motorcycle helmet is sufficient to start causing measurable hearing damage after 30 minutes.

Quote:
I spoke to a chap at a bike shop and he told me the quietest helmets are the Schubert S1. 85dB at 80mph. Compared to 98dB for shoei (my current) and 104 dB for Arai (I thought they were loud).

To give you an idea, 104dB is roughly the same noise level you would experience standing 100 meters away from concorde taking off or someone screaming in your ear as loudly as they can from 1 metre away ie. Bloody loud!

On occasion I have forgotten my earplugs on a long run (say 5 hours on the road) and have noticed a distinct dullness to my hearing through the night, having to get people to repeat themselves and such. A bit like the morning after a rock concert.

I think my AGV is slightly too large for me now that the padding has given a bit, and it is bloody noisy. Having said that, I've spoken to other people with V-Flyers, and they've said they're too noisy too. There is a funny flap which folds down at the front of the helmet which deflects the airflow away from the bottom of the helmet.

So you, Marjay, me and zxr400er have all had this problem with AGV lids. Confused I definitely wouldn't recommend one in the future, as it's just stupidly noisy now although the little flap does help a bit for higher speeds. After a new helmet ASAP now. Thumbs Down

Sony does a noise Cancelling Headphones the MDR-NC11 that’s meant to cut noise by 70% but at $150 there not cheep.

I really don’t know how well they work or weather they would cope with wind noise and there to expensive to try without recommendation.

Has any one tried them are they any good?

Here is a link to them

Distance plays an important part, the sound disperses rapidly the further away from it you are. That is why I said concorde at 100metres and a shout at 1 metre.

You'd not get within 100m of Concorde taking off anyway, let alone trying to know what the distance was as it pissed off into the distance. Smile

This is where I start being ashamed of myself for not being able to remember the equation for simple sound decay, having studied it only 8 months ago. Mad

Well. Not now. But I was lucky enough to see a vulcan a good few years ago at Leuchars airshow. Can't have been much more than 100m away from the runway as it took off. Same engines as concorde, they were fookin loud but not painful at that distance.

B1b Lancer is louder. Tupelov Backfire is mind-buggeringly loud!

They don't accelerate all that fast on the way to takeoff. You'd be way ahead of it on a sports bike until the wheels left the ground.

Well I had 1 earphone in on my mp3 and it was at nearly full whack (couldn't hear conversation with lid on before journey). When I was on the motorway (about an hour in) I was travelling at around 80-90 and could not hear the music at all.

I've just looked at the Lucy Dell page, very interesting. I will probably get one of their test packs then buy a years worth.

Also that Schuberth helmet will probably be my next, the pain from Thursday was too much, headache and everything.

Ash T, as it's already been said, try different types of earplugs. The first ones I tried where Motrax, and they where shit. Then I bought a box from a safety supplies company and they where far better. Out of the selection I got Max and Laser lite ones, which I find are the best. It also helps if you put them in correctly, which I wasn't at the start. If you have them in right, they don't fall out or work their way loose and they make a complete seal in your ear canal.

I've got loads of earplugs, if you send me your address I'll put a handful in the post if you want?

Caberg J1+...has a sort of 'skirt' on it anyway, that combined with ear plugs makes it TOO QUIET. Shocked

As suggested, the skirt thing seem to work well. Mine fits snugly onto my chin/throat, so no draughts.....nothing. Tried a full face helmet and felt naked by the fact that it didn't have a s'kirt' on the thing.

Talking of jet engines, I got buzzed by a Tornado F3 when I was just about to enter a roundabout today. Laughing It confused the buggery out of me, I couldn't see anything coming, yet there was this fecking loud screeching roar. Made my day. Very Happy

I would say don't eat beans the night before!

On a more serious note if wind noise bothers you don't get a caberg justissimo because they're almost as noisy as a poor fitting Arai

This user digs up a year old thread to post two plugs (bah dum ching!! Laughing) about the products his company sells.

The user also posts 3 other posts ... also plugging his company.

Smells like tinned meat to me!

I'd give him some latitude. He's in the right thread, he's bang on topic and I'm definitely interested in a pair. If they turn out to be crap, I'll let you all know... Thumbs Up

I'm not a spam-tolerant sort of person, either.

He deliberatly dug this thread up because of it's content, so that he could spam his company at us. I wouldn't mind but his post is a year late!

Surely the 3 other posts he'd put in more recent threads (which I've not rated as SPAM) were sufficient?

Also, he's not put a single post up that contributes anything to BCF other than links to his company website. If he'd just put one other post saying "yeah, I like wheelies too" or some other non-spam dribble, it wouldn't have annoyed me half as much.

I don't wear earplugs at all and i've never experienced the wind noise being too much. Is it possible i'm not even noticing my hearing become damaged?

At 100mph its not significantly loud, my helmet is a really nice fit (so much so that when I put it on I have to fold my ears back so they aren't squashed :p).

I don't think the tightness of my helmet does it as I can hear people talk quite easily before I get on. When doing high speed I tend to be tucked in behind the fairing though.

My apologies for upsetting your forum.

However to come up with a new product such as this whilst doing a day job including everything that is involved and trying to promote it is very difficult.

Have noticed the reaction from forums and to say I am a little disappointed and surprised. This product was created to give riders a cost effective and comfortable ear protection system better than foam plugs and cheaper than custom made versions at £75 plus.

Using a couple of forums was the best we I felt of getting the product across to gauge opinion of it for this application.

Yes we would also like to make sales, who wouldnt if you had invested £1000's in your own new product.

I will not post again.
