Been offered two new jobs. Both Are defense and M.O.D based type work and both are great jobs for IT support!

one is 22k a year, about and hrs travel and I think its a call centre type job but not 100% sure. they have sports clubs a bike club and lots of other aminties too. Hex works for them too so he tells me!

the Other is about 15mins from where I live 18k a year more hands on and is in acres of greenland and forest! They also have a private part of the River Test that I am allowed to fish as well!

Both are great! one is more money but the other is closer and has fishing!

Im not sure what one to go for! I have said yes to both atm

Both require SC Security checks and the offical secrets act signed as well.

Im not even sure if I can get SC yet!!

theres 300 quid a month in it only really £75 quid/week , but I reckon the closer one ,

long commutes cost money and take time and depending on the roads can be dangerous or boring, I did a long ass commute earlier this year sure the roads were twisty as fook but day in day out got boring and tiring.

time being precious and unclaimbackable , an hour a day each way is 2 hours per day , 10 hours a week , with 250 working days thats 500 hours more than 3 weeks commuting lifes too short for that unless you are willing to move which'll cost you even more.

And you'll defo need a good bike and a spare just in case you fuck one up , since emergency measures (pub transport , push bike) ain't gonna get you the range a motorbike at high speed will in an hour.

this is just my opinion though , tried commuting miles and miles liked it at first then didn't.

I would go for the second one, willing to bet it will cost alot more in the cost of petrol for the journey in situation 1, and also the value of your vehicle will depreciate more with the extra mileage, it's the little things that go along way.

Also I would be more happy working in a relaxed environment, which is what 2 sounds like. You could have your lunch in the woods while sitting with your cast line.

How good is that! Thumbs Up

I travel an hour each day anyway! The 1st one is about 10mins more than where I am currently working!

I see what SC comes back first!

But the extra 4k a year dose sound nice! Confused

How much of that will be tax though? I'd go for the local job. That extra time in bed in the morning does you the world of good I think. Short commutes rock.

SC is the lowest form of clearance, shouldn't be a problem at all, millions of people have it. If you get yourself into a role where you see things classified Secret and above, you'll undergo Developed Vetting, which is far more intensive.

The official secrets act is just a green piece of A5 paper - pretty much meaningless anyway, just to cover their backs. Not sure they even need you to sign it these days, it can be considered to apply just by the nature of your contract.

I see these dilemmas all the time - being in recruitment!! Rolling Eyes Without knowing much about the different companies it's difficult to be objective, however...money isn't everything - things worth looking out for when making these decisions -

When are the salaries reviewed ?

If the busineeses have a grading structure where is the pay they are offering you relative to the band - high or low?

What is your holiday entitlement?

Do the cos. pay bonuses - how are the measured? Is it profit or performance related?

Do the cos. have pension, health or PHI schemes?

As Barry_MC21 says what are the career prospects? Do they offer training/development/further educational opportunities?

Also...what's your boss like? Do you think you can spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with him? Did you meet some of the other team who'd you be working with? What are they like? What's the 'atmosphere' of the places like? Buzzy? quiet?

Finally how successful are the companies - do a Google search about them - review their report & accounts & make sure they're profitable (especially if your bonuses are paid on company profit performance)

If there any any specific points you want to discuss privately feel free to PM me! Thumbs Up

I'd say go for the 2nd one.

If I had to take a £2k pay cut to get a job 15 minutes away,I would without a doubt. £2k is two thirds of my annual travel expenses! Also, the peace of mind of a short commute (if youre riding the bike) in the depths of winter when its cold and lashing with rain you'll be glad you didn't take the 1 hours commute option!

In the IT world, hands-on experience is worth a lot more than call-center experience. Besides, they usually have statistics and customer service survey requirements at call centers, and that kind of corporate BS makes even the funnest job tedious.

Go for #2.

I'd go for #1, but then I'm a greedy bastid. £900,000,000 wouldn't be enough for me. Laughing

the official secrets act is all BS as long as the secret you are ousting has public interest say Blair being caught with his pants down in a nursery you won't get prosecuted for it.

OSA is obselete anyway and only serves to save the face of government when they fuck something up or do something they shouldn't have done.

I wrote a reply to this last night and managed to loose it. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I belive the 1st job is one for one of the service providers for the company I work for. Im not actually sure how much of a telephone support job it is, as I know they actually sort all the network problems etc out as well, though there is of course a phone line that has to be manned.

As you wouldnt actually work for the people I work for I can't comment on what benefits are offered to you.

If the second job is hands on and more like what you want to do I would go for that one. I would actually go for that one simply because its closer and we both know that transport seems to let you down regularly. Wink

The fact it is closer will negate the slightly lower pay as in essence you save time and of course the travel costs, plus if your left without your own transport, its obviously easier to get somewhere thats 15 mins away than an hour.

As for your clearance I wouldnt worry about that, takes about 3 months like I said to you before and if you took the 1st job you would never need DV clearance as you simply dont have access to the data that requires you to have that level of vetting.
SC allows you access to secret anyway, but like I just said you never actually really work with the data so its not an issue, its more so you can walk around unescorted everywhere.

Hmm I don't really agree with that. I agree a lot of information/data is classified incorrectly, even a lot of restricted stuff should only be commercial in confidence at best. But if classifications are used correctly they are to be treat with some respect. A lot of data that floats around in the company that Stu's first job is for, if given to the wrong people would compromise a hell of a lot of our national security and is graded as such.
