I've always had cats, but haven't had one for a couple of years, my last cat made it to the grand old age of 23!!

I said to myself as soon as i was settled i'd get another one, well i'm settled now, so its time.

A friend of my missus mentioned that her cat has recently had kittens and she has one left that no-one seems to want. So we went over to have a look last night and i can't believe this poor little thing has been rejected.

The kitten that is available is a girl and shes black, grey and white. An adorable looking feline friend. So we said we'd be happy to provide her with a good home, the owner loooked very relieved and asked me to think of a name for her so that she can start using it and she starts to learn it straight away.

So in about two weeks little Ninja will be running around our house. Her markings reminded me of the black and silver paint schemes of the recentish ZX6R's Smile

Now my only problem is, i don't really know how to prepare for the little ones new arrival, so is there anyone out there that has any experience in this department?

Oh and we already have two black labradors, so i need to figure out the best way to introduce them to their new house mate and make sure they are gooing to get on with each other. The dogs are called Rossi and Nastro Smile

So any advice would be very welcome and appreciated, thanks in advance

Cool name Very Happy Can't wait to see the pictures Wink

You can never be ready. Laughing

I would advise you get as much sleep as possible, unless your house has various doors (mine is open planned). I get woken up at between 4.30am and 6.30am in the mornings.

I guess the usual list of stuff you need would be:

Food Bowls
Kitten Food
Litter Tray
Litter
Pooper scooper
Blanket/Something familiar - from the birthplace
Toys & Scratch post
Bed
Squirty Bottle (For when they're naughty, it works!)

We need a BCF Kitten club Laughing

We've always mixed cats and dogs without any problems.

The easiest thing to do is bring the new kitten in, in a basket type thing, put it in the middle of the room and leave the dogs to sniff about it. The cat will be safe as the dogs can't get at it if they turn, but it will also let the dogs get used to the smell of the new cat and the cat get to get an idea about what the lumbering great lumb of dog is. After a little while (i.e when the dogs have got used/bored of the smell) let the kitty out for a wonder, chances are it'll head straight for somewhere to hide!

Thanks, i'll take some pictures as soon as she arrives Wink

I've been reading up on it this morning and it seems theres a lot to take into consideration, the less traumatic for the little ball of fur the better.

We have a three bedroom house that isn't open plan and i'm going to prepare the spare room for her. Its right next to ours so i should be able to hear her in the night.

Not sure about leaving the door open to her room straight away as she might wander down to investigate the dogs downstairs and i'm not sure what they will make of her at first.

Thanks for the shopping list, i shall visit the local pet shop at the weekend and see what i can get. Thats an interesting point about something from the birth place, i'd never of thought of that. I take it the squirty bottle contains water? Confused

I second the BCF kitten club idea Very Happy

Thanks Chris, which did you have first? the cat or the dogs?

My other halfs dogs grew up with a cat apparently but they got separated and when she split up with her ex husband. Since then they've been taught to chase cats and whenever Rossi or Nastro see one now they go mental Sad So we're going to have to undo that training real quick.

I started as soon as i moved in with them and they are getting better, they understand the word "friend" and "nicely" and "gently" and "cat" and if i say "no friend" they stop and just sniff them. So hopefully it'll work out fine.

But that is the main reason i'm unsure whether to introduce them to each other straight away.

Remember - Ebay is your friend - I have bought lots of cheap stuff for my two on there! Smile

Yes - Squirty Bottle contains water - very useful when they like to climb work surfaces and lick things they shouldn't be licking etc. Used it on my Mums persian and there crossbreed - and they're pretty much trouble free now.

At what age do kittens become cats, voiding my membership to the club?

Frank is now 2 and the biggest cat I've ever seen, he's a bloody monster! If he stands on his back legs he can easily rest his chin on our kitchen worktops!

When does a kitten become a cat?
Kitty Calendar:
• One Day Old: Newborn kittens are very tiny and you can hold them in the palm of your hand. They can't see yet, but they can smell. All they can do is sleep and drink their mother's milk.
• One Week Old: Their weight doubles and their eyes begin to open.
• One Month Old: They start to sit up and play with their siblings.
• Two Months Old: They stop nursing and begin eating food.
• Three Months Old: They begin to lose their baby teeth and new teeth grow in.
• Six Months Old: They get along on their own without their mother.
• One Year Old: Kittens become full grown cats. Cats can live many years. The average life expectancy of a cat is 14 years, but many live to be 20 years and older.

I'll get some pictures of Frank to try and show you his true size. He's not fat, just tall and long.

Gutsy sod though, we feed him as and when, not a lot at once as if it's been out a while he won't touch it. On Saturday the sod hadtwo and a half tins of cat food and was still wanting more. This is as well as a hell of a lot of those whiskas complete biscuits!!!

I want to see how big he'll get!!!

Oh crikey, where to begin..

Ermm, I guess right at the start we had a dog first (well, puppy) then got two cats (kittens) soon after. The cats then went a year or so later (various reason, not because of the animals) so we just had the dog....we then got more dogs....and then more cats. At one point we had 4 dogs and 5 cats. It then dwindled down to 1 cat and 1 dog.

They all got along just fine as long as we gave them a chance to get used to the new one. No need to keep them seperate for to long, it only puts off the inevitable, it would be better to have the kitten and dogs meet when you're there ready incase anything kicks off.

Mum now takes in old...very old...animals (cats and dogs) and they never get along that well, but as long as they have room to avoid each other, there shouldn't be any issues.

I'm no vet but I'd say thats a little unhealthy!

From what I understand, animals don't tend to feel full until they are sick so they will just eat and eat and eat, as in the wild they won't always have a steady supply of food so have to cram in as much as they can when they do get some. Or it could have worms....

You could always do what the zoos and sanctuaries do for their big cats, wolves, etc. That is have a fast day when they get no food. Although that's basically to stop them hording it's not been cruel.

As for cat litter I'd go with the Bob Martin crystals. Makes cleaning the stuff out a lot easier Very Happy Thumbs Up

Wow! thats a busy household you had there for a while. I agree about putting off the inevitable, i suppose it depends how long it takes for her to settle in and start to trust us before i let the dogs be around her and we will definitely be there just in case anything kicks off.

I was never a dog person until i met the two labradors that i live with now. They are so well behaved and very inteligent that i have a new respect for doggies now. I think they'll work out that they have a new friend rather than an enemy fairly quickly.

Thanks for the tips on the cat litter Icey and Map, i will see what our local pet shop has to offer, as i presume ordering off the net may get a bit expensive when it comes to postage.

Have any of you tried these kind of litter trays?
