I've always had cats, but haven't had one for a couple of years, my last cat made it to the grand old age of 23!!
I said to myself as soon as i was settled i'd get another one, well i'm settled now, so its time.
A friend of my missus mentioned that her cat has recently had kittens and she has one left that no-one seems to want. So we went over to have a look last night and i can't believe this poor little thing has been rejected.
The kitten that is available is a girl and shes black, grey and white. An adorable looking feline friend. So we said we'd be happy to provide her with a good home, the owner loooked very relieved and asked me to think of a name for her so that she can start using it and she starts to learn it straight away.
So in about two weeks little Ninja will be running around our house. Her markings reminded me of the black and silver paint schemes of the recentish ZX6R's
Now my only problem is, i don't really know how to prepare for the little ones new arrival, so is there anyone out there that has any experience in this department?
Oh and we already have two black labradors, so i need to figure out the best way to introduce them to their new house mate and make sure they are gooing to get on with each other. The dogs are called Rossi and Nastro
So any advice would be very welcome and appreciated, thanks in advance ____________________ My Bikes in order:- Yamaha RXS100 / Suzuki X7 250 / Yamaha RD350LC / Kawasaki

Cool name Can't wait to see the pictures
You can never be ready.
I would advise you get as much sleep as possible, unless your house has various doors (mine is open planned). I get woken up at between 4.30am and 6.30am in the mornings.
I guess the usual list of stuff you need would be:
Food Bowls
Kitten Food
Litter Tray
Litter
Pooper scooper
Blanket/Something familiar - from the birthplace
Toys & Scratch post
Bed
Squirty Bottle (For when they're naughty, it works!)
We need a BCF Kitten club ____________________ Mutley - 1988 Austin Mini City - Blog

Thanks, i'll take some pictures as soon as she arrives
I've been reading up on it this morning and it seems theres a lot to take into consideration, the less traumatic for the little ball of fur the better.
We have a three bedroom house that isn't open plan and i'm going to prepare the spare room for her. Its right next to ours so i should be able to hear her in the night.
Not sure about leaving the door open to her room straight away as she might wander down to investigate the dogs downstairs and i'm not sure what they will make of her at first.
Thanks for the shopping list, i shall visit the local pet shop at the weekend and see what i can get. Thats an interesting point about something from the birth place, i'd never of thought of that. I take it the squirty bottle contains water?
I second the BCF kitten club idea
Thanks Chris, which did you have first? the cat or the dogs?
My other halfs dogs grew up with a cat apparently but they got separated and when she split up with her ex husband. Since then they've been taught to chase cats and whenever Rossi or Nastro see one now they go mental So we're going to have to undo that training real quick.
I started as soon as i moved in with them and they are getting better, they understand the word "friend" and "nicely" and "gently" and "cat" and if i say "no friend" they stop and just sniff them. So hopefully it'll work out fine.
But that is the main reason i'm unsure whether to introduce them to each other straight away. ____________________ My Bikes in order:- Yamaha RXS100 / Suzuki X7 250 / Yamaha RD350LC / Kawasaki

I guess if you can get a collar small enough then you can put them on, I've not heard any different anyway.
Opel & Yoshi Nearly 3 months
I put a collar on them, because I don't trust them, they're good at escaping out the door when your walking out I just wanted to be on the safe side really ____________________ Mutley - 1988 Austin Mini City - Blog

Oh crikey, where to begin..
Ermm, I guess right at the start we had a dog first (well, puppy) then got two cats (kittens) soon after. The cats then went a year or so later (various reason, not because of the animals) so we just had the dog....we then got more dogs....and then more cats. At one point we had 4 dogs and 5 cats. It then dwindled down to 1 cat and 1 dog.
They all got along just fine as long as we gave them a chance to get used to the new one. No need to keep them seperate for to long, it only puts off the inevitable, it would be better to have the kitten and dogs meet when you're there ready incase anything kicks off.
Mum now takes in old...very old...animals (cats and dogs) and they never get along that well, but as long as they have room to avoid each other, there shouldn't be any issues. |
Wow! thats a busy household you had there for a while. I agree about putting off the inevitable, i suppose it depends how long it takes for her to settle in and start to trust us before i let the dogs be around her and we will definitely be there just in case anything kicks off.
I was never a dog person until i met the two labradors that i live with now. They are so well behaved and very inteligent that i have a new respect for doggies now. I think they'll work out that they have a new friend rather than an enemy fairly quickly.
Thanks for the tips on the cat litter Icey and Map, i will see what our local pet shop has to offer, as i presume ordering off the net may get a bit expensive when it comes to postage.
Have any of you tried these kind of litter trays?

Had one for ages, it was great, ours even had a door on the front, I think we got our from Argos. The only reason we stopped using it was that Frank was too tall to fit in it properly, he had to hang out the front of it.
We've now got one of those big crates you use for storage. That way he doesn't kick litter everywhere! ____________________ How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could Chuck Norris?

He out grew it!?! oh dear
I'm not sure whether a kitten would be able to get their head round it to start with though, thats my only worry ____________________ My Bikes in order:- Yamaha RXS100 / Suzuki X7 250 / Yamaha RD350LC / Kawasaki
