Basically just doing my CV, it has all the basic information on etc etc, but my main conern is, its coming up to the 3rd page, is this too long or is this fine? Because i heard 2 pages is sufficient? I suppose to shorten it i could lob my first part time job off coz it isnt really relavant. What you think, oh and do i put a border on it or leave it just plain white with writing ?

Is it a general CV or is it job specific, for a particular job that you are applying for?

2 pages MAX...if it's more than two people switch off, personnel bods have enough to read through so dont bore them with pages of stuff, nice neat and well laid out personal info.

Exams passed etc etc, hobbies - 1 liner, a small para about yourself and your good qualities, then list each job in brief bullet points.

Tbh I'd be more impressed by a neat to the point 1 page CV with factual info than 2-3 pages of stuff that I cannot flick through and gain the actual information I require from quickly.... Thumbs Up

The shorter the better, but not too short.

Anything over 2 or even 3 pages is too much and will be boring to read, the information will be hard to locate and decipher

Agreed then, keep it fairly brief, don't try and pad it out with irrelevant stuff. At the end when you've finished it read back through a few times, if you aren't interested in reading it they won't be either.

Yes. As said above 2 pages if you must but try (and I know it's hard) to do in just one.

Play around with the layout. Avoid using like the plague the preformatted Microsoft Word types (but have a look to get ideas). Try putting a summary at the top where it'll get read and contact details at the bottom where they'll get read if the rest is interesting. Also be flexible and try and modify the CV to emphasis your skills that the job/company is looking for (keep copies!).

HTH Thumbs Up

fuckin hell Breeze , anything not too relevant put something like

my jobs before this involved (insert skill here) say like

my jobs before 2003 involved patience , stamina and an eye for detail
hence you can compress tons of old jobs into a single sentence.

details provided on request for previous jobs.

anyway what happened to the warrington job?.

Ayeeee thats me, got an holiday to pay off you see, plus i want some money for clothes and the bike/ and new bike/ plus bills, vinyl etc etc, the list is endless!

Nar i think the first choice ones about the same money 18k a year rising to 24k with experience, so fingers crossed, if not then have to try something else, like Royal Bank of Scotland.

I would just like a customer service type role, Travel is preferable although im open to options like Banks/Insurance.

And yeah drinks are on me, but i only drinks Holts Laughing Holts "ROCKET FUEL" Bitter.

Bullet point relevant skills previous jobs etc.
Don't worry too much about things that have no real impact for the job you are applying for. Thumbs Up

No no no no.

The thing about 2 pages is bollox. Your CV should be as long as it needs to be, but all the information on it should be relevant.

For example, lets say you are a social worker. You have 15 years experience doing social work type jobs. You only need to give info on the last 10 years as you will have dont the same skills in more detail then than when you were training, so just put companies name, dates worked and position held for the first 5 years worth of jobs.

If you did a job in a highstreetclothes shop during that 15 years, the experience is not relevant so you would just companies name, dates worked and position held and minimal experience details if its transferable.

You should always tailor a CV for each individual job.

If you like, tell me what you are going for and i will rewrite it for you in a decent format.

(im a recruitment consultant by the way - badenoch&clark if you are interested)

kaben Thumbs Up

I agree. Needs to be tailored to the job. My CV is expected to be around 10-15 pages.

I do hope thats a joke? If that landed on my desk i wouldnt know whether to throw it away in disgust or give it to a playwright.
If your CV is longe enough to be a manuscript your going wrong lol.

Then I guess that it's fortunate that my CV is unlikely to land on your desk! It's not a joke - I perhaps even understated it (example)!

for IT/Tech support CVs can and often are 5-6 pages long detailing experience with tons of programs proficiency and any qualifications associated with them , this is a limited case though and does not apply to jobs outside IT ,

There is no right or wrong answer to how long it should be. It is down to the individual doing the recruiting, but as a rule CV's are supposed to be simple, structured and concise.

I was responsible for recruiting my assistant in my last job, so I read plenty of CV's, 2 pages is plenty in my opinion, you are not supposed to be telling your life story, and being concise is a skill in itself.

My CV (2 pages) consists of:

Personal Details (name, DOB, address etc)
Personal Statement (3 sentences - summary of what I do, my aspirations tailored for each job applied for)
Education and Qualifications
Interests
Employment History (bullet points for key duties)
Personal Skills and Qualities

The other key thing to remember is layout and consistency of spelling and grammar. A spelling mistake on a CV throws everything you've said out of the window!

It's not, although I am in a similar line of work. Stopped today as it happens, when a ped hit a car (went to Beaulieu). Nothing much wrong with him, fortunately. Given the amount of livestock wandering around, I was expecting an accident involving a bike and a horse.
