Okay, so viewing a bike on monday with the intention to buy, my cheque cleared friday, and im wanting to draw £1700 out of my Savings account at Nationwide.

ive heard they need 3 days notice, is it possible to get the money by the afternoon if this is the case?

Does a bankers draft work, does it take time to clear like a cheque.

im abit worried.

Steve.

Mondays are a good time to draw money out of a bank without notice, as a lot of shops will do their paying in on a Saturday. I've been lucky in the past doing this, but I don't think it will be as true for building societies.

A banker's draft is a cheque issued by the bank itself, so you wouldn't need to wait for it to clear.

Yes, but Steve wouldn't have to wait for it to clear. Not unless whoever sold him the bike didn't trust the bank to have enough funds Smile

Since the change in the law regarding money laundering, it's harder to withdraw large amounts of cash with no notice. Give the bank a day or two's notice and you should be fine.

I bought the firestorm with cash, and just went to the cash machine the 3 preceding days and maxed out the withdrawl limit. Couldn't be bothered sorting out large withdrawls.

Abbey said anything over £500 they need ID for when withdrawing from a saver's account. They never mentioned a withdrawal limit, but as has been mentioned already, it may be different for a building society.

If you can't get the cash, then why not take the fella down to the bank and get it transferred.

No they're not. Bankers drafts will not bounce due to insufficient funds, as they are drawn on the account of the bank itself - however bankers drafts can still bounce if they have been stolen.

See APACS website.

Go into the branch and say you need it sharpish, if they are funny about it say you want to close the account and are going to take your business elsewhere, that has worked for me in the past. Thumbs Up

Have a look on the Nationwide website it says what notice is needed to access each type of account so you can see if it's instant or 3/4/5/however many days notice.

The notice period doesn't usually mean the bank may not have that amount of cash available, it geneally means that unless you give them the required notice you will lose interest on your savings, anything from a months worth to a years worth depending on the terms of your account.

Ring the bank first thing in the morning to check.

As has already been said, you can also ask the bank to do a CHAPS payment (same day electronic transfer) into the sellers account. There is usually a charge for this though and it might be as much as £20.

Unfortunately, anyone who offers me a bankers' draft is likely to be someone who I don't know, therefore can't trust - and I don't know what kind of dodgy acquaintances they have.

If I knew the person anyway, they may as well give me a regular cheque.

I had the same problem with my account, i had to withdraw 1100 and as i was only 15 at the time i had some crappy account where my max withdrawal was 100 a day, so it took me 11 days to get the full money out

indeed, just been down and its that stupid £100 a day! its my f"cking money, i think i can decide how much i can take out, wankers...

i think ill have to phone the guy and see if he will accept a bankers draft, wich means batering the price over the phone, taking a risk i know.

Like GSXRmick said tell them you want to close the account now and wants your funds as cash.
I have done this in the past and it works a treat.

Yeh its shit but i went to get my bike on a sunday and on the saturday i had 300 left in so i had to transfer 100 to my dads account, so unless you have like 18 friends that u trust to transfer the money into there account then i think its a bankers draft

The reason (according to the Abbey) is to promote people using their own personal cheques, the fact that sellers dont like taking them and some shops have stopped taking them all together seems like a bit of a shite excuse to me Rolling Eyes

I've walked in off the street with just my passport and withdrawn £1,600 over the counter, they just asked a few questions and handed it over.

Done the same with £3775 in the past. They made a bit of a fuss 'cos I only had a provisional licence at the time (just hadn't sent it off), but did eventually get it all sorted.

Usually I just give the bank a quick call - that way if they need to open a safe or whatever, they can do it in plenty of time.

I've a mate who works as a manager of a bookies, they had someone come in to place a bet on the Brazil vs Japan game, just dumped £100,000 in £50's on the counter, for Brazil to win.

Good job he won! Still, cos the odds were so crap he got back £122,000. That's a pretty big risk!

My mate had to walk down to a local post office where they do their banking with all this bloody cash!!!
