Any tips on painting a deltabox aluminium frame? Confused
Dont have money time or patience to polish up so thinking about painting it!
Thought wouldnt need primer,so would i just key it and put some coats of paint (probably silver) then lacquer over it! Thumbs Up
This goes for the fork legs aswell!
Any help would be appreciated! Wink
Cheers! Thumbs Up
Steve

get some scotchbrite and reproduce the original finish, very cheap just make sure your strokes are all in the same direction.

An explanation why might not go amiss, or else your post is an equal waste of time and effort.

fork legs are a different type of alloy and should be polished or painted. you should get good results on the frame if you do it properly.if you are going to paint it make sure you get etch primer specially for ally it is different from normal etch, then use a good 2k paint or laquer over base other wise it will scratch easily and look worse than it is now( i`m presuming thats why your thinking about painting it) Laughing

Not sure you'll get a decent result with home diy spraying or painting. Hammerite Satin Spray gives a nice result (similar to modern oem black frames) on ferrous metals but on alloy or zinc coated parts you need to apply Hammerite Special metals primmer first and that only comes in a tin so you'd use a brush which must affect the finish somewhat. I guess if you had your own spraying gear then you could thin and spray the primmer on?

For the best finish, then you'll be hard pressed to beat powdercoating. I've just had my NC30's frame, swinger, subframe, wheels & auxillery parts powdercoated (Satin Black except wheels which are gloss & fork sliders in dark metalic grey) by a local (to me) company called Triple S. It cost me £275 but this is a well reknown company who do a top notch job and you do pay a slight premium for it...in the case of my NC30 I think it was well worth it.

You can read about my NC30 renovation & rebuild HERE (my main forum) as Im documenting most of it and am now upto the stage of putting the newly black frame and bits together again. Powercoating results mainly on the last few pages but on earlier pages you can see the result on some ferrous parts I chose to use Satin Black Hammerite on myself Mr. Green

Special metals primer works really well and brushes on very very evenly youd be surprised. Mr7/11 from OSS did his big bore GSX motor in it looked great!

Make sure if you aint the frame, to remove all the clear anodising using a drill and wire cup-youll notice whit stuff flaking off when you scour it with the cup, when you start to get swarf move on.

Brush on the specials primer, allow to dry and apply whatever you want. Hammered hammerite is dead sexy!

I've just (or still in the process of) painted the swing arm off of my FZR frame.

After a damn good clean, scrub and sand I used Hammerites Special Metal Primer. It painted on really easily, although it was brick red and was dry in 20-30 minutes. I just need the top coat now ready to be put back on the bike next week.
