The bloke wouldn't say on the phone..wanted to say what is wrong with it in person

Is this generally a bad sign ?

Would happen when I am stoney broke too Rolling Eyes

How long do I have to get whatever it is fixed ? I am guessing until the date of what my original MOT is,... which would be in a weeks time Shocked

Indeed, up until the expiry of your current MOT.

If you leave it with them, they'll have it fixed and re MOT'd before a week I imagine. It'll cost you though.

I was told that with the digital database registered MOT's that if it fails, even if its tested before the expirey date of the old MOT, you can not legally take the vehicle on the road as it will flag up as no MOT to mr fuzz?.

Could well be complete BS!, but thats what I was told Rolling Eyes

You can legally ride to and from a test station without an mot so don't worry, you'll be able to ride it home if you want.

Hope you get it sorted and it's not expensive.

FWIW the VOSA admits an MOT certificate is just a snapshot of the vehicle's condition (which is right!).
VOSA leaflet wrote:
An MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test, without dismantling, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law. It does not mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate. The test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Thumbs Up

Damn and blast,
gona cost £500+ to fix
and I only get a free re-test if I get the repairs done in 7 days

No chance dude ! Shocked

Points picked up on:
No rear reflector
Rear position lamp does not illuminate immediately
Front bearing have excessive play
Rear suspension stiff
Rear tyre valve stem damaged
Rear tyre needs replacing
Drive chain excessively tight

Absolutely gutted
I genuinely don't know what to do
Going to keep it locked up in the garage

I only have £400 to keep the entire family and stuff going for the next 2 weeks. There is no way I can find that money

Bah

They said that the rear shock would probably need replacing, but they couldn't tell until it was all stripped down
But they are almost certain it will

God, I wish I knew how to fix bikes !

Exactly what I was going to say. Either you have left other bits out or the mech is bullshitting you. Mate, I'd reccomend going to another garage and seing what they quote.

Good luck Thumbs Up

I think I am being had!

On the mot failure it only lists what i first put... thenhe said the shock would 'probably need doing'
And that is about £220 on it's own

Can they tell this purely from 'stiff rear suspension' ?

Rear tyre needs replacing - £85, probably £110 ride in ride out.
Drive chain excessively tight - £0 - Get hubbie to slacken it

Or perhaps a slightly used tyre for maybe £50 or less off ebay. Shocks for the FZR seem to be relatively common, look to find if any alternatives fit as that will mean you have more at your disposal on ebay.

Is hubby mechanically minded? Most of that doesn't really require much knowledge. No idea on the tyre valve or front bearing though.

Tiems like this you can't give it to a garage for them to do the work. Any BCF'ers near you?

Time to ask. Smile I'd help but I'm nowhere near you. Laughing Surprised theres not more offers of physical help on this forum, kind of disappoints me in a way I guess.

You sounded surprised that it failed. Surely you knew it would if the tyre needs replacing. Confused

Then again, with the BS list (or at least BS prices) they have knocked up i'd get a second opinion on the tyre too if it looks ok.

I don't know if they do bikes but i take my cars to the local ambulance service station. They just do mot's not repairs, so have no incentive to make up jobs or fail it on silly little things.

Hi

Another vote for that price being way too high. Rear linkages can be a pain, but 90% of the time you will be fine just stripping them and greasing them.

And you can get a rear shock rebuilt for under £100 (even the ones that are not meant to be rebuildable).

All the best

Keith

Sounds too much like a rip-off to me, saw you coming, get it looked at somewhere else and flag up the name of the first place so we can all avoid it.

I'd recommend going somewhere else.

You could always get the cheapies fixed and take for retest at a different centre and see if they have the same comments. I have heard of failures passing withiout the work being carried out as the testers are not being such assholes.

Do the work yourself and get your hands dirty Thumbs Up

I have no mechanical experience prior to owning this bike, and i've chenged the fork seals myself, and fully derestricted it myself.

Bearings are cheap and easily replaced. Get the exhaust off, get a trolley jack under the engine and lift the bike (making sure the centre of mass is behind the jack, then put axle stands either side of the engine, and a plank or two of solid wood across them.

Then it's off with the front wheel to change the bearings.

Jack

Yes you do. In Rugby, the house where we had the BBQ after your rideout all that time ago. I'm sure Pete would be happy to help you sort it out - if you don't still have contact details drop me a PM but don't expect a reply til Sunday cos I'm off to the MotoGP in about 5 hours time!
