Hi

where does everyone buy their tyres? does anybody know any good websites that have some good deals on? should I just ring local dealers and buy through them? I havent had much experience with this.

need new front and back for my hornet, need long life because I use it for commuting but also want some with decent grip for weekends (and the commute is on some twisty roads!). Any recommendations? hornet owners board members seem to favour avon azaro ST's... moving to france so the roads will be dry most of the year yet when it does rain they get really slippy... any advice appreciated.

Also, I'll be riding the bike down to the south of france in July, should I be worries about the trip (which will probably involve alot of motorways) squaring off my nice new tyres??

cheers,
james

If you paid me lots and lots and lots of money, I might put Avon's on my bike.

Not long enough life, but M&P have some very good deals on Dunlops last time I checked.

Lancaster eh?,

theres two nearish places near me,

Tony Salt , TST tyres near babyyam

Sharples (Bolton)

you can play them off against each other, just like insurance

I went into sharples and said what can ya do me for BT45s ? £190 , no wayy Salty can do BT45s for £170 (he actually quoted £180) , he said oh you know salty eh? hows that B****** , (I don't know him at all) he then gave me £161 ride in ride out. I then went back to Tony Salt (I had to go to Cheshire anyway so it wasn't a trip just for that) , who then said £155, then back to Sharples who then said £151.

whenever I go to any other shops in North Mancs they call sharples,

Whenever I go to any other shops in South Mancs they call Tony Salt

I asked them what about loose wheels and it was about £7 per wheel difference.

I've had Avon Vipers on my GSXR for about a year now. Can't fault them. Razz

Try harder Wink.

Haven't used Vipers myself, but seen enough cases where Avons they offer significantly lower levels levels of grip than comparable tyres from the big makes.
In day to day riding it shouldn't be an issue because people generally don't use tyres to their limits - it's just when you suddenly do need a tyre to grip very well, Avons often don't seem to.

I got a pair of Supercorsas off of ebay for £150.

Your probably going to be wanting something slightly harder though, it'll be well worth shopping around as I got a pair of BT45's (brand new) for £100 from a local bike shop (special offer though).

Try them before you judge them then. I've never used any of the old avons, so can't compare this to their older stock, however the vipers perform as well as the BT010's I had on before them.

Will find out for sure next thursday at Cadwell!

ok, now I'm confused Smile

Hornet owners report up to 9000 miles from a rear avon azaro st. Still I guess it depends how you ride. But I bought Ride just today because I saw they had a tyre feature and they claim good life from azaro's and good grip in the wet.

Ride also says michelin pilot roads offer good grip, yet I've heard that they're rubbish and dont get hot enough (this might not be such an issue for me in france). 200 quid for a pair fitted, is this a good deal?

Tempted by dunlops now, just because I haven't heard such worryingly conflicting opinions. Nobody has anything bad to say about the D208's do they?

itchy- I need to update my profile. Was in Lancaster up until 2 weeks ago, graduated and back in the North East now, near Darlington. Not for long though.

Would you say you've got the BT010 or Viper controllably (or not?) to the limits of traction?

I would say that for everyday road use, and a spirited ride on the twisties for pleasure, you cannot fault the Avon.

Pisses me off when people go on about things like the RRRRRR1000RRRRRR being 2% better than the latest GSXR1CBRRRR when they'll blatently never use more than 40% of its capability.

So, no, I've not used either tyre on the road to the limit of its ability, I think you'd be an idiot to do it.

So therefore, I don't think the "ooh, the avon is more slipery then anything else" comment is valid either, because on the road you're never going to reach a level where you'd notice it.
And if you do, you've probably not got the ability or experience to use it, and will just shit your pants and crash into a bush.

Avons are fine for the road, particularly the new Vipers.

I'll let you know next week if I find the limit of it's traction at Cadwell. Wink

I shop around on the internet for a good price for any given tyre, then visit the locals to see whether they can come close to beating the rpices found. After tyre fitting/balancing, there's not usually much in it - my last set of Diablos set me back £160 all in last time.

Try a quote from:

https://www.moto-tyres.co.uk/

(the motorcycle part of https://www.mytres.co.uk - who are usually very competitive on car tyres).

I would say for everyday road use and what some people would consider 'spirited riding' (can't comment on your road riding as I've never seen you riding Smile ) old Macadams would be fine - infact I've been on a ride out with other BCF members, including having to wait for some, with just that, similarly with unevenly worn continentals.

However, this doesn't mean I would reccomend them.

I generally do try and avoid going too stupid on the road, but I like to have a decent safety margin, should I do something stupid; intentionallly or not. For instance coming off a roundabout going onto a motorway in that 'spririted' fashion I had the arse of the TRX step out a bit as the shell grip was a bit broken up in places, as I have had in a few other situations, with an 010 on the rear. I'm pretty sure that had I still had my macadams on, I'd have been on my arse, but the 010s handled it fine. Oh and I didn't shit myself or crash into a bush, but there's always next time Smile.

In the end, if you're satisfied with 'acceptable for general riding', pretty much any tyre will do Smile.

While it's not something I'd do in everyday riding, I was able to get my knee down with 010s on a (fairly small) damp roundabout. Not useful in it's own right, but very useful to know should you sudddenly find a car cutting you up with apparantly no where to go at that speed.

Thanks for the link.

TST quoted me £20-30 for a front depending on what I wanted and £30-40 for a rear.

Cheers Itchy.

Yes.

Coming out of 'Park' in session 3 of Thursday's trackday at Cadwell Park, I had the back end spinning up and sliding out quite considerably sideways. The fact that I controlled the slide is probably more luck than judgement, and certainly helped somewhat by my after-market steering damper. Thankfully I didn't complete the manouver with a spectacular high-side, and continued to finish the day without any further incidents.

In my first ever trackday, I set a time of 2:03 round Cadwell, which I'm quite proud of. Whilst the Avon tyres may not be the best on the market, they're certainly good enough for my current needs. However, I may try something a little more sticky for next time if I'm going to be pushing things any further.

If you're a novice/average road rider, or even if you do the odd trackday, providing you're not trying to set similar times to the BSB boys, you'll be fine on a set of Avon Vipers.

Thumbs Up

ebay, i have never ever bought a from a shop and i have never bought a brand new tyre, they are a rip off, why pay £230 for fitting when you can get a perfectly good pair of Dunlop 208s for £100 that only have 50 miles on them.

Because for about £30 ish more I can have a brand new set of Pirellis with no miles on them at all!

brand new tyres just mean more scrubbing them in , while with 50 miles on them , thats just another 50 miles of running them in ,

Because I get a full trade discount and only pay about £120 for a set for a big sportsbike.

I also never buy the latest greatest tyres but I do buy the weird stuff like racing Metzler MEZ1 Racing tyres when they were still available. Basically a slick with a tread cut in them. Cost me £70 a set about 4 years ago when they did them and better than just about anything but only lasted a thousand miles.

I also get free punctured tyres and plug them.
