Meant to be collecting a car that I've 'bought' on Ebay. Just done a HPI check and its come back as a Cat C (damaged but repairable- insurer decided not to repair). How does this affect the car, its value etc? Also this wasn't declared by the seller, should it have been?
Thanks

Email the seller and tell them you know this, and that you're not impressed they withheld the information. Tell them you're not going to pay what you bid for it, offer a low price - take 20% off at least.

If they go for it, it's up to you. Ultimately it depends what happened to it - if it was a front end smash I'd walk away, it will lead to future problems. You may never know what happened though! Sad

yea and also if i didnt tell you about that, what else has he "forgot" to tell you.

Def offer a lower price but ultermately could end in negitive feedback on ebay.

Thought I'd start with asking for more details - let's see what he comes back with...

Yea, still a good way to get a discount. It not something you forget about a car IMO and think he was being a bit sly not tell you Thumbs Down

He was under no obligation to tell you, you have to specifiacally ask. So legally he's done nothing wrong.

However, if you don't pay the worst you'll get is an ebay unpaid strike which means naff all really. So don't feel pressured into buying it.

It depends on the car as to whether it's worth buying and also what the damage might have been.

I've just come up with a fantastic new idea for a TV show.

Its about a man who solves online crimes in his spare time.

I call it:

"Mister Siggi: Ebay Enforcer!"

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Walk away!!!

Cat 'C' is a nightmare about to unfold.
Generally bought back from insurers and repaired on a tight budget, insurance company may refuse to cover OR payout in the event of a claim.

Also think about the re-sale, if you come to sell it you may have a hard time.. Plenty more things out there.

Run run as fast as you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well thanks for the advice guys. Spoke to the seller and got him to drop the price. However, after thinking about it and listening to you lot, decided against it.
So, Ta Thumbs Up

Well, not necessarily.

The bumper fell off my mums car when some idiot reversed into her, there was no damage to anything but the bumper, but because the car was old, and a body shop quoted hundreds and hundreds to source, spray and fit a new bumper, the insurance company wrote it off as a Cat C.

We bought the car off the insurance company for not a lot, dad bough a new bumper for £50 second hand, bolted it on, and we were away again.

I wouldn't think twice about declaring this when selling the car, it just wouldn't occur to me, the car's perfectly fine.

And what about the car that got a bent roof in a minor side impact, the door gaps were never right after the shoddy repair, the sunroof pissed in water etc and it made the car impossible to re-sell.

Also the car with light suspension damage....turned out to be in fact chassis damage, this wasn't picked up by an engineer until the car had been sold on and it was found to be wandering dangerously and causing uneven tyre wear... Too many good cheap cars on the road to warrant buying some relic.
