At the end of this month l,m going with two other BCFer on a weeks touring in scotland and will most like be doing over 2,000-2,500 miles. but l can,t decide what bike to take, so please vote for ethier the Thunderace or FX400R

Thunderace

Pro,s
Arrow Good mpg

Arrow a very fun bike to ride

Arrow can carry more equipment/luggage than the FX400R

Arrow very fast bike

Con,s
Arrow Just fitted new pilot power 2CT,s a few weeks ago so don,t really want to kill a super sticky soft expensive tyres with touring

Arrow Like all thunderaces it drinks oil which means l would have to take about 4 liters for the trip

Arrow the bike is,nt as confortable as the FX400R and has a sporty riding postion

Arrow Is a tarty bike with polish frame/swingarm/clutch cover etc and is well looked after so am worried about it from a week of hard use plus the possablty of crashing

FX400R

Pro,s

Arrow Just had new cheap touring tyres fitted

Arrow confortable

Arrow does,nt burn any oil

Arrow is a cheap bike so are,nt worried about damaging it on a tour

Arrow better in the twistys than the thunderace

Arrow very simple bike so easy to fix on the road side

Con,s

Arrow Can,t carry as much as the thunderace

Arrow Not as fast as the thunderace only tops out at 110-120mph and has poor accelration

Arrow uses more fuel than the thunderace

Arrow The engine had to be worked very hard to get and desent power

Arrow Its a naked bike with no fairing so not that good for the motorway

Arrow possbley not suited to touring with a sports 600 and 750

wow, i really started a trend Very Happy

Id take the thunderace, Wave will be on the duc so yourll both be wanting stops and some will the say on sports 600 (yoko maybe??)

I think you would regreat the 400 if its slow as will be constantly taken over by the others and not fun to ride....and yourll be riding a lot!!!

if you will be doing mostly motorways, take the FX400. if you will be "having fun", take the 'ACE.

my Penny Coin Penny Coin

one thing puzzles me though, you say the fx400 is "better in the twisties", yet it has cheap touring tyres. do you mean more "flickable" but with less outrite grip?

Take the Ace, its a sports tourer, let it 'sports tour'.

Believe it or not, you can actually buy oil in Scotland.

looks like l,ll take the Ace, l know you can get oil in scotland (they do produce oil after all) but l only use semi sysnfectic shell VSX 4 which l buy bulk amouts of 12 liters and don,t really want to mix oils.

thats some interesting comparisons

i would never have guessed that the 400 would drink more fuel than the ace, but i guess thats at high speeds rather than low speed stuff

If its drinking so much oil that it'll burn though 4 litres in 2500 miles, I think you're past worrying about mixing oils from different manufacturers. Just chuck in whatever mineral oil you see in the petrol stations, its not going to be in there long enough to break down.

Take the ace. You can buy more tyres, and scotland has fun roads with nice corners and loads of visibility. You can ride incredibly fast, safely, for long periods of time.

my hope is to get to glasgow in 1 day, that way thats the shit part done and dusted, we are going to be riding alot, i usually stop every 20 miles to oogle views and rest and piss around.
motorway will be the biggest chore so if you think you cant handle that then use the ace.

I don't think 'all' Taces burn oil Tatters. As you know (and saw) I had one and rarely topped it up between services.

Back to the question, take the Ace over a 400 anyday, enjoy the new tyres they are consumables after all.

Of the two bikes, which one would you rather be riding when you are tired, aching and just want to get to your destination?

we are riding for fun, fast touring,
i found that when touring last time, half of the fun was being on the bike, the others was funny stuff that happened inbetween.

becasue its fast touring l,m taking the ace but if l was touring on my own which l plan to do in spain next year l would take the FX400R because its a cheap plodder which l brought for commuting and touring, the only real problem l have with the ace is the postion hurts my wrists but l think that becasue l have,nt been out for a desent ride on it in a month now.
