Quick question on revs

Just a quick question

doing 70/80 on motorway and bike is revving at 8000 revs is this normal

Feels high, almost like there should be another gear to drop it down.

When I take the throttle off the bike it doesnt coast/role, it engine brakes and I slow down a lot faster than expected or required.

on a ZX6R 600CC

or is it just me ?

Has it been down geared at all?

My CBR is standard gearing and I think its at about 6000-7000 for 70-80mph.

I have a ZXR-400 which does about 8000 at 80mph. I would have thought the 600 would be cruising alot easier at that speed!?
My 400 is only just getting started at 8k though so even though it sounds like it needs another gear it doesn't. It weren't built for cruisin'.
I was thinking about getting a 600 purely for making it a bit less hectic cruising on the motorway, is this not the case, anyone?

A ZX6R is a high revving bike anyway, but 8000 revs does sound too high at 70 mph if you are in top gear! I would have thought it would be several thousand revs lower than that. Is the bike stuck in too low a gear? Kawasaki engines are pretty good, but they don't make the best gearboxes in the world. Suzuki gearboxes are definately much better! I had a ZX6R F3 some years ago and loved the bike. Had to use the gears a lot to make the bike work though and sometimes when changing up a gear it felt like I'd changed up, but in fact I hadn't. Also, it was easy to forget what gear you were in with all the changing up and down because the bike was designed to be very high revving so changing up to top gear was sometimes missed, not that it would hurt the engine just the fuel consumption maybe!
There should be some engine braking when rolling off the throttle in top gear at 70 mph, but not a huge amount. Obviously there would be a lot more engine braking if you were in a lower gear!! Making sure you are definately in top gear by counting through the gears as you change up and actually feel them engage might solve your problem or otherwise the problem be with the gearbox itself - not good? Sad

Just thinking about this - would clutch slip cause this? If it was a sustained slippage instead of the on/off it usually presents itself as, it would cause the high revs/low speed issue, not sure about the increased engine braking.

My bike's been downgeared and sits at about that in 6th.

Take a pic of your rear sprocket and folk on here'll probably tell you straight away if it's a standard sprock or not.

It's to high and rpm. Dodsi's zx6r J1 and my SV have the same gear ratios as standard and both do 7000rpm at 90mph.

Count the gears, is it 6 before it stops?? If it's not then it's not reaching 6, if it is then the sproket's been changed.

I reckon yer missing a couple of teeth on the back cog only. 8k rpm should have you sitting somewhere about 90-95. If you're saying that yer only about 80'ish, then I would doubt that the front cog has been changed - would result in too much of a change?

btw, 70mph on my zx12 is about 4k rpm...hirrhirr

Gears run against each other
Sprockets are moved by chains (as in the bike)
COGS are big wooden items with pegs powered by a water wheel driving a millstone to grind wheat into flour.

Does seem rather high.

Bandit cruises at 75MPH at 6,000 revs.
