Went to look at a Honda SP1 yesterday which has been sat in a shed for a year, the downpipes were pretty rusty. I assume these are stainless steel but can stainless steel rust through like mild steel or is it likely to be just surface rust? any long term effects?

Thanks

can rust through eventually, but takes along time, the better the steel grade the longer it will last.

should just be surface on an sp1,wet n dry and a bit of polish should bring them back up to standard(or better).

Will be just surface rust, for serouis rust on stainless steel it would have to be exposed to salt water.

I was hoping as much, it didnt feel like nasty rust (if that makes sense) it was very smooth still.

Stainless steel rusts beautifully. You should see the exhausts on my GPZ! Shocked

It only happens because it gets heated up so much and makes it vulnerable, if you keep them polished it would stop it happening.

I wonder why companies still use steel and not thicker aluminium instead which doesn't rust would maybe save weight (if the tubes were made thicker but not so thick that it weighed more than steel).

Harder to work with, would be a lot bigger than steel to get the same strength. One small knock could bend the pipes out of shape easily.

Aluminium is soft, expensive to make awkward to weld and just generally not as good as stainless. Duralium would work, though Thinking

Would an aluminium exhaust just not melt into a pile on the floor?

Not at all, aluminium does have decent heat resistance, it does soften under heat, and would probably oxidise extremely rapidly, as it normally does on contact with air, but the heat causing expansion of the metal would cause deep oxidisation. Therefore it'd be like having the aluminium anodised. Lovely and white! Very Happy

It does have remarkably good heat resistance yes but in order to make an aluminium exhaust with the same strength as a steel one it would need to be a lot thicker. Remember the exhaust is right in the firing line for stones etc kicked up from the front wheel. So much thicker in fact that it wouldn't weigh much less than a steel one. Then theres cost... aluminum isn't cheap.

I believe the main reason for not using aluminium is it conducts heat too well and the idea is to keep the gasses as hot as possible until they reach the outlet.
