Okeydoke, I've just gone and bought a bicycle. I always had a bike as a kid up until I left school, then jumped back into it for a few years in my mid twenties, but nothing "serious". During the shopping process I had a go on a couple of bikes, and something struck me as weird - my head felt really exposed and vunerable. All this time wearing a crash helmet on a motorbike has given me an almost subconcious feeling of protection, and I'm actually considering getting a bicycle helmet.
It's as though a bit of kid in me has died.
So, I'm wondering how you bicycle riding peeps out there feel when it comes to bicycle helmets? ____________________ Current: CB500 Previous: CB100N, CB250RS, XJ900F, GT550, GPZ750R/1000RX, AJS M16, R100RT, Enfield Bullet

I have a Giro Switchback (i think) which is a full face helmet with a removeable chin-guard that turns it into a Hammerhead.
a GOOD helmet is comfortable, and fits well. I've ridden wearing cheap shit helmets, and ended up taking them off because they were so uncomfortable. a good lid, just like on a motorcycles, will protect better because it fits, and you'll also be more inclined to wear it.

I haven't ridden a bike regularly since I was about 18 and I think if I did these days I would be tempted to buy a crash hat because I don't bounce like I used to.
I'm really not convinced that most helmets I see would be effective. I think those skull cap style BMX ones would be good although unpractical and hot, but the racer style look pretty pointless and almost look like they'd do more harm than good.
The worst accident I had on my mountain bike was from cruising straight into the back of a parked ford capri (it was black and so was the road). I was found unconcious in the road by a woman on her way to work.
The doctors in casualty gave me the helmet lecture but I still protest that if I was wearing one of those silly peaked helmets it would have pushed my forehead back and possibly broken my neck.
Luckily my eye socket, front teeth and chin absorbed the impact. ____________________ GSXR600 |

I ride a bike every so often but never wear a helmet, bike helmets are normally so uncomfortable and i just cant be bothered. But if i was riding every day for a longer distance i probably would consider wearing one. ____________________ Rieju MRX 50 Castrol Edition |

I ride my bicycle both on and off road a fair amount, but have never worn a helmet. Earlier this year when I was using it a lot I did buy a new helmet, but I never actually wore it. The weather was freezing and I was used to wearing a hat, but the ventilation in the helmet meant it was too cold and there’s no room to wear a hat underneath.
So far in this hot weather I’ve still just never got round to wearing the lid. I know I should, but it just never seems appropriate. I guess I’m just from a generation of kids who never saw cycle helmets until we were older and set in our ways. Poor excuse I know.
The design of the helmets apparently is to make them as lightweight and ventilated as possible while providing protection for the most common of bicycle accident which is riding smack into something solid i.e. tree, car, side of bus, etc. The instructions for mine tell you to wear it as low over the forehead as possible because that’s where most people ding themselves. The side and back of head is apparently lower risk. ____________________ 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

Never used to, these days it's pretty much 50/50 between whether or not I wear one. Since I'm starting to do longer rides on harder trails and often have my MP3 player on when I'm on the road I think it's getting more likely I will need to use it. ____________________ Photos and that |

Looking at doing some road riding with a local cycle club if I ever get some free time, |
Haven't you got like 7 bikes, a kitchen and a bathroom to fix before you start a new hobby?!
I never used to wear a helmet, but came off 3 years ago cycling home from work, was just pulling away from the lights when my pedal snapped off and dumped me in the road. I can only have been doing 5 mph - but the impact of falling from that height gashed open my forehead and almost blinded me with blood.
Since then, I've always worn a helmet on a pushbike, especially round here where the drivers are so cack. To my mind, as with a bike helmet, it isn't worth the risk of not wearing it. ____________________ >Soultrader Mister James, I bet you are a copper
