Okeydoke, I've just gone and bought a bicycle. I always had a bike as a kid up until I left school, then jumped back into it for a few years in my mid twenties, but nothing "serious". During the shopping process I had a go on a couple of bikes, and something struck me as weird - my head felt really exposed and vunerable. All this time wearing a crash helmet on a motorbike has given me an almost subconcious feeling of protection, and I'm actually considering getting a bicycle helmet.

It's as though a bit of kid in me has died.

So, I'm wondering how you bicycle riding peeps out there feel when it comes to bicycle helmets?

I have a Giro Switchback (i think) which is a full face helmet with a removeable chin-guard that turns it into a Hammerhead.

a GOOD helmet is comfortable, and fits well. I've ridden wearing cheap shit helmets, and ended up taking them off because they were so uncomfortable. a good lid, just like on a motorcycles, will protect better because it fits, and you'll also be more inclined to wear it.

Always wear a helmet.

I started riding push bikes properly is school, doing grass track racing and you had to wear a helmet. Habit kinda stuck, even now it feels sooo wrong to ride without one.

I haven't ridden a bike regularly since I was about 18 and I think if I did these days I would be tempted to buy a crash hat because I don't bounce like I used to.

I'm really not convinced that most helmets I see would be effective. I think those skull cap style BMX ones would be good although unpractical and hot, but the racer style look pretty pointless and almost look like they'd do more harm than good.
The worst accident I had on my mountain bike was from cruising straight into the back of a parked ford capri (it was black and so was the road). I was found unconcious in the road by a woman on her way to work.
The doctors in casualty gave me the helmet lecture but I still protest that if I was wearing one of those silly peaked helmets it would have pushed my forehead back and possibly broken my neck.
Luckily my eye socket, front teeth and chin absorbed the impact. Thumbs Up

I ride my push bike to work each day but never wear a helmet. That said I also don't ride the bike on the road so it does cut my risk a bit. Still if i come off the bike I'm gonna end up eating a lot of pavement. I know I still should, just not got round to it.

I ride a bike every so often but never wear a helmet, bike helmets are normally so uncomfortable and i just cant be bothered. But if i was riding every day for a longer distance i probably would consider wearing one.

I ride my bicycle both on and off road a fair amount, but have never worn a helmet. Earlier this year when I was using it a lot I did buy a new helmet, but I never actually wore it. The weather was freezing and I was used to wearing a hat, but the ventilation in the helmet meant it was too cold and there’s no room to wear a hat underneath.

So far in this hot weather I’ve still just never got round to wearing the lid. I know I should, but it just never seems appropriate. I guess I’m just from a generation of kids who never saw cycle helmets until we were older and set in our ways. Poor excuse I know.

The design of the helmets apparently is to make them as lightweight and ventilated as possible while providing protection for the most common of bicycle accident which is riding smack into something solid i.e. tree, car, side of bus, etc. The instructions for mine tell you to wear it as low over the forehead as possible because that’s where most people ding themselves. The side and back of head is apparently lower risk.

wheni was yonger it was uncool to wear a helmet on a bycle now obviously i am older i know why and it is not uncool. i see more people now wearing them including my dad when he goes for a cycle, though my older brother dosnt i noticed. same generation there you see. my lil sis wont put one on at all and has loads of them to.

if i where to get on a bike now i prob would not wear one. stupid i know but what would i be on a byble for? unless its in a gym of course.

as I said,.. more expensive lids tend to be more adjustable, and hence, more comfortable.

I've wore lids on push bikes for years and I owe my life to them so im alittle in support of them.
I've crshed so hard on concrete it knocked me clean out and smashed the helmet in two!!!, now what would have happened if I wasn't wearing one!.
I've gone full pelt into lamp posts, trees all sorts!!!.

I spent many years as abit of a nut on a bikes.

Never used to, these days it's pretty much 50/50 between whether or not I wear one. Since I'm starting to do longer rides on harder trails and often have my MP3 player on when I'm on the road I think it's getting more likely I will need to use it. Razz

Have a Giro that i take with me everwhere offroad, but it does come off for sub 10mph stuff.

Wear it for road riding if i'm doing more than just popping to the shops.

It's 10 years old so i should really buy a new one that fits a bit better....

Motor bikes have made me far to lazy to even think about riding a push bike.

But even when i had one i didn't wear a helmet, got too hot wearing one, they aint that safe saying you got nothing to protect your face.

I wouldnt say i was lazy Razz i walk pretty much everywhere less than a mile or two but i do agree about the lack of face protection!

I've not been on a push rod for a long time and i never used a helmet before either because i doubted the necessity.
If and when i do get myself a new mountain bike i will most probably buy a helmet to go with it because i would rather
have it and not need it than need it and not have it...

A bit of facial scarring is nasty.

Hit the wrong bit on the rest of your head and it can be much, much, much nastier.

I don't have a push bike helmet, but really should get one and wear one as I can be seen doing stupid things off road on occasion.
My dad was killed riding a push bike on the road, maybe a helmet might have saved him, though from what I know that's not so likely.

Looking at doing some road riding with a local cycle club if I ever get some free time, suspect I'll have to get one if I do that.

Haven't you got like 7 bikes, a kitchen and a bathroom to fix before you start a new hobby?!

I never used to wear a helmet, but came off 3 years ago cycling home from work, was just pulling away from the lights when my pedal snapped off and dumped me in the road. I can only have been doing 5 mph - but the impact of falling from that height gashed open my forehead and almost blinded me with blood.

Since then, I've always worn a helmet on a pushbike, especially round here where the drivers are so cack. To my mind, as with a bike helmet, it isn't worth the risk of not wearing it.
