Warming tyres up

Having just fitted a Pilot Power which supposedly warms up very quickly, I wondered how long it should take for them to reach optimum temperature (taking into account the ambient temperature) and how far I can push it before they reach this optimum temperature?

For example, if I've just set off and the tyres are as cold as they'll be in our 20+ degree heat, how hard can I push them without risking losing traction?

I usually do 10 or so miles as that amount of time on the bike gets my confidence up and am quite happy to lean, and i do it quite gradually. This is on Dunlops though.

They never will reach optimum temperature on the road, on track about 3 laps of an average circuit will see them nice and warm. On the road I should say about ten minutes ride should warm them enough, depends what the ride is though - high speed warms them faster than trickling through town etc.

I get used race tires for £50 a pair, the rear lasts for 2000 miles and the front double that and they give excellent grip, thats pretty good if you ask me.

On the track my tires were warm enough to push pretty hard in three quarters of a lap round Cadwell and seemed fully up to temperature in two laps (about 5 miles)

For fast road riding race tires are great, i know i will not be using all the grip they can offer but they still work brilliantly at the speeds i ride at and i know i have a lot of extra grip if i want it.

They come up to enough temperature for normal road riding really quickly, i would say within a couple of miles on country roads, and i can push pretty hard with no problems.

I'm using Racetec's too. Quite impressed with them as I've always had Dunlops in the past, which I also found very good. I brought the Metz's for my last trackday, as I wanted something very grippy.

Both track and road they feel quite good, and as I only really ride the odd weekend and evening, it's not going to cost a fortune.

K1 front and rear.

I've also got the pressure's lower than recomended. I'm running 30/32, rather than 32/36.

I loved the 207's, ran them years ago on my first ZXR7 and never looked back. Although they were crap in the wet, I used to spin the rear up for fun coming out of corners.
Thankfully I never crashed.

I've just been given a 208GP front, so will stick that on my spare wheel and give that a try at some point.

I've not use the Metz's in the wet yet, and hopefully wont need to, they dont look like they will be too clever!

K1 seems to be the happy medium, i'm hoping the K2's are still good.

The standard pressures for my bike are 36/42 and i'm running 32/36 on the road, 30/32 is what i was running on the track

I found the Dunlops weren't bad in the rain and could push quite hard, but the Metz's are terrible apparently, however i've ridden on them in the rain and they're ok as long as you keep the bike as upright as possible (loads of hanging off involved) and managed to keep up with my mate on road biased Bridgestones of some sort

I use BT014's and they are great.
Don't take long to warm up, just had a new set on done 80miles on them, ride for 2-3 miles, the just build up how much you push the tyres to build heat.

After two or three miles of increasily spirited road riding, your tyres will probably be as hot as they are going to be.

When racing I've done a one mile warm up lup on completly new cold tyres, then gone for it as much as I normally do from the start.
I'd say the warmup lap was probably similar to a slowish 'normal' fast group trackday lap for many!

I recall reading an article in "Performance Bike" or similar mag.

They recommend about 10 minutes normal slow riding once you set off, then do a couple of hard acceleration and hard braking to really generate some heat.

For the edges of the tyre, just start to lean over slowly at first and build up to getting it cranked right over - the heat generated at the middle of the tyre will help warm up the edges too.

K2 front should be fine for the road.

Especially fronts tend to be in quite ready supply in slightly-worn form.
While most of the used rears I've got are quite knackered (I tend to run them into the ground at practice days etc), still got plenty of good condition fronts that I'll be sticking up for sale at some point - probably under £30 each.
