Help! Bike electrical problem!

OK was on a rideout to Wales yesterday, had been doing a lot of motorway/A road riding when suddenly the bike starts losing power and I notice the tacho drops to 0 which was wrong cos the engine was still turning! I stopped the bike, and turned the engine off. Turned the bike on again but didnt fire up the engine and there was a weird buzzing noise coming from the front of the bike. The Speedo immmediately went up on its own. We could also smell a burning smell coming from the front of the bike (might have been from the fusebox). Now at this point the engine wouldnt start not even the starter. Dashboard lights still worked however. AA man arrived (got roadside cover) but the battery had gone flat. WHen he connected the bike directly it fired up however the bike couldnt start on its own and he didnt really seem to understand the situation. I've now had to leave the bike on the welsh border Does anyone have any idea what these weird symptoms might be from?

Had exactly the same symptoms on an old feista of mine. Was the engine management chip that had fried and it too knocked out the rev counter and speedo like that...

I had a Virago years ago that did the same thing, though at first i had run out of fuel, then noticed the burning smell and found it had boiled the battery dry due to a shot regulator, fitted new regulator filled the battery with tap water and away it went first try.
Check battery level, get it running and check battery voltage, it shouldn't be above 15volts, if it is it's over charging and you need a new regulator.

Yes, Smelling/Buzzing hints to a short, that must be attended to first.

Other problems may then just go away on their own, if you are lucky.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've finally got the bike back home tonight so will give the electricals a full checkover tomorrow and update you on the situation.

OK sorted out the main problem simply changed the reg/rec and the battery. Now using one of those aftermarket Japanese reg/recs with the fins on em. So most is ok HOWEVER..... Now my dipped beam and rear light arent working!!!! My full beam works fine and my brake light comes on when I hit the brakes too just no dipped beam or rear light when u turn the lights on. The AA man when I initially broke down was fiddling about with some of the wiring at the front of the bike so hope he didnt pull anything.

It could be both bulbs, if the regulator was gone and your lights were on, it's the dip beam and tail light that take most of the power, sometimes every other bulb that gets switched on blows aswell, could be about 17v going through them, easy job to take them out and check, not such a big bill to fix compared with the regulator.
