How the hell do you wear earphones in a helmet?

So how is this done? I tried it today, hurt like hell and nearly couldn't get the helmet off again as the earphones jammed themselves between my ear and the helmet.

Are there some special earphones that I am missing out on?

I take it you haven't done the CBT, DAS or any motorcycle lessons?

You have to wear an earpiece and they are available from many places such as Dixons, HMV and anywhere else they sell mp3 players and walkmans.

Yes I know that but it hurts and is off putting. When I did my DAS the speaker was built into the helmet.

Anything that goes around the ears is going to hurt and ache a little even sunglass arms as the foam padding is tight and designed for them not to be there.

Do what siggi does and drill a hole in it,

or buy one of those flat speakers and stick it in the side,

that said the DVLA discourage it as it may cause a loss of concentration.

I just stick them in my ears and try to pull my helmet on with out them falling out. I find if you dont have those soft foam bits on you head phones they will fall out and get jammed.

Is it actually illegal to ride with earphones in? I was sure it wasn’t but i was putting my earphones in as i was leaving school and some guy said it was. Dont really believe him but just wanted to check.

just get those over ear clippy types that you use on your training and do the one ear thing, some tunes but able to hear some stuff around you

normal apple ipod ones work fine for me. when putting the helmet on one occasinally slips out but you just fiddle it back in! may look amusing at the perol station but who cares! I rode 360 miles wearing them and my ears were fine.

there are some Sony ones shaped slightly differently that are meant to be quite comfortable. After taking my test using those hang over your ear ones I want to stay away from them! they aren't the most comfortable!

Get the ones that come with bike-to-bike or rider-to-pillion systems. They are flat, covered in foam and velcro to the inside of the helmet's liner. You don't even know they are there.

Hi,

I bought the Nolan N102 as it has N-Com capability which is a speaker system that can be put in the helment with accessories for mp3 player, mobile phone (wired and bluetooth).

Got the helmet but cannot afford the n-com system yet so currently relying on headphones and they are painful if they are not sitting right!

This scottish dude when I went up to see the motogp was showing me some fucking nice earplugs he had. Basically they were custom -molded for his ear (s) and the earplug part was in the middle.

If you google for something like green lizard earplugs or green dragon earplugs (I was shitfaced at the time so can't remember exactly what it was called Razz

) and they should come up. They aren't cheap though, something like £150ish I think he said but worth it if you're going to wear the things all the time for a long distance. Might also take a bit of searching on their website as I recall when I looked it up a few weeks back.

I ride with heaphones to work every day, and find that any of the pea in your ear type headphones absolutely kill. It gets even worse when you're going along at speed and the helmet is being pushed against your face.... Sad

SO I use the clip over your ear jobbies but not the ones that actually go in your ear.

The trick with getting them into your lid without mashing your ears is to try and do one side at a time. So slip your bone dome down till just above your ears, then tuck the top of one ear in whilst holding the earphone in place, then the other, and once both are in you can ram it home...and then stick your fingers in and wiggle it till its comfy. Helps if you have indentations for your ears in your lid though......

As I mentioned in a previous post on this subject, flat headphones/speakers for the helmet may be what you need.
