First Spray

Well, I done the main 2 front parts of the bike yesterday.
Took my time, and im quiet impressed with the job done.
As you can see its almost the same colour, it was just to get the marks back and look nicer.
the darker pic is just to show it in more detail but the suns glare is making it look a tad wrong.

Get some worn 1200 grit paper and soapy water to flat the base coat down then laquer the panels.

thats it finished its been laqured i think, and shes spraying the whole bike

I wasnt after a perfect match. Just something different.
Im a hands on girl, and I got the bike as a project as well as a run around so I knew I would spray it sometime or another.
Its been laquird. its completly smooth and the same colour throughout - not dark/light spots. As i said the sun makes it look wonky.

If it's a rattle can job then make sure you keep petrol away from it, especially in this good sunlight we've been having. Would hate to see your good work to to waste

Yup I will do. Just a few panels to go.
The way I see it, if it dose go wrong its not a lot of money thats gone to waste and a lesson to be lernt

Looks like it still needs a bit of finishing. Good base coats though. I'd either rub down with wet'n'dry (12 or 1500 as already mentioned), or get the rubbing compound out. It'll come up like a blue mirror once the paint's deep enough.

lacquer is needed first, that is an unlacquered finish, unless you've done a cack job

So are you saying rub down lightly and keep spraying blue?
I used cellouse (spelling) for the finish is that good enough stuff, or go find another laquire

what they are trying to tell you is the finish you have know is unprotected and may have a slight orange peel effect to the surface, what they want you to do is rub the blue down lightly so as not to remove all the paint but to take the shine completly off it and remove any defects that you have in the paint finish, then you will need to get a clearcoat(also known as cklear laquer).

you then need to spray your dulled down surface leaving to dry between coats and giving a light smooth down before applying the nex coat of clear.
then when you have finished maybe 3 /4 coats you need to leave it to harden then cut back the finish with a T Cut or smooth rubbing compound before buffing with a wax polish.


or you could just spray t with clear coat and leave it at that and enjoy what you have done an take a bit of pride for having a go.

Problem is with those spray cans you get from Halfords and other places is that I could never get a decent finish with them. Used to try it on crappy old cars I had and it was never quite there. I think (as rightly said above) is a process of rubbing it down a wee bit with the wet n dry sandpaper.

I thought cellouse was clear laquire. As another member said he used it :S

Iys not orange peel as dazlnooby says, yours is dry finish, caused by applying the paint from too great a distance at too fast a rate..

Stand the can of laquer in a warm place, maybe in a plastic bag inside a bowl of luke warm water to liven up the accelerants in the tin.
Practice practice practice to get the smooth finish, it can be done with rattlers but its harder than using a Devilbis gun

If you lightly flat the surface prior to the next coat then it will help prevent uneven build up.
Do NOT let it dry between coats as you had been advised!!!
Let it go go tacky, its called 'Flash off' this procedure allows the chemicals inthe fresh coat time to disperse and evaporate prior to the new coat, if the last one dries b4 the new one then it won't bond the same.
Its an art, i've been doing it for many years, cellulose is by far the best for a novice. 2k is the best for instant results but its more harmfull to use however you can get an aerosol made up at an auto re-finishers such as 'colour tone'.

I use synthetic base metallics / pearls and then a 2k hardened laquer for a swimming pool deep shine.

Louise, stick to Halfords tins but give it heavier coats of clear laquer with a warmer tin to boost the nozzle pressure slightly.

Shouldn't you paint on a 6-800 grit finish as the paint won't stick to anything smoother? The advice i had was to not sand metallic colours on the topcoat. Then just flat and buff the lacquer when that's been applied.

you dont need to flat the panels before the clear, clear straight onto the painted surface and work with this.
