Got from the MCN site, there's this video from TfL.

Having seen it once I think it'd put people off from commuting on 2 wheels.
Apparently that wasn't the aim, just make people think about safety.

Anyone any views?

P.S. Video is in flash. Tried playing this in firefox and failed. So if anyone has problems try it in IE.

I chose maybe. While for me it doesn't change anything, I would imagine that it might affect others. I think most of us have been guilty at jumping into 'automatic' mode on the way to and from work sometimes - I think the aim of this video is to wake people up.

p.s. it didn't work in Firefox for me either, but does in IE.

I don't think so, I think people need a reminder every now and again, especially as they're right about people getting complacent near their homes.

I used to work in a market garden and, one day, we were taking the lorry through the country lanes to another field. Some bloke drove out of his driveway about five feet infront of the lorry and ended up on his side in the hedge. When the Police asked him why he pulled out, he said, 'Oh I always come straight out there, there's never anyone coming'. Tw@t.

Cheers

Ridiculous, MCN are total shit stirrers.

Scare people of motorbikes... The fact is THIS CAN HAPPEN and you MIGHT DIE if you ride a motorbike. I think that if this advert changed your oppinion on riding a bike then you wouldnt of lasted long on a bike... As you probably had a mind set of a mental patient... everything is a dream world where you can crash at 200mph into a car and you just bounce off and pick your bike up and ride off again laughing whilst the sun is winking at you in the sky.. Oh and birds are sitting on your shoulders.

Rather than scare off existing motorcyclists (who by definition already appreciate their are risks) would it scare off new riders wanting to start riding/commute by motorcycle/scooter?

Nope, doesn't scare me at all, and also shouldn't you always ride an open door width away from parked vehicles? Confused

Forgive me if I'm totally missing the point here - but wouldn't it be better to do an ad for car drivers / passengers to say look before you open a door? If there had been a bus coming it would have taken the door off!!!

It's clever as although we think it's aimed at us and in a way it is, it's shocking to EVERYONE including car drivers. So they will also remember and perhaps also think bike.

But that's not the aim. It's an advert about complacency near home not really 'think bike'. Using a bike to portray the message makes it much easier to show a harsher result to complacency than just a car driving into a wall and the airbag going off.

The problem with doing it from a car's prospective is that people just switch off watching it. But from a bike's prospective, especially as like this one showing the total lack of control you have as to where your body goes, it grabs everyone's attention making them cringe, biker or not.

Im surprised Euan McGregor did the voice over, if the shock factor of the advert makes cage drivers more aware of the dangers that throwing open a door can cause then it can only be good.

The only people i know who have lost a limb both lost them from bike accidents, it didnt put me off learning to ride a bike, what does put me off riding like a tw@t is wanting to see my wife and kids when i get home.

I think this advert is more aimed at car drivers as we know the risks that we face everyday which is why we do what we can to minimise them.

Personally speaking and not trying to interpret the ad from any other angle than my own, I'm afraid I fall into the don't care category. I accept the risks of what I do and I try to live for each day. I try to take things as they come, I can't live trying to justify the way I live/ride to anyone other than myself. I know that I want to return home to see my wife and child again and that's enough for me. I don't need to be reminded of it by adverts telling me I'll die on a bike, I have already accepted that and do my best to avoid it.

If it works for others fair enough, for me I'll ignore it as another badly thought out scare mongering ad and keep on keeping.

i think we are all aware of the risks involved in riding a motorbike, especially on the clogged up roads of today. Yes we are 'aware' of them, but do we ever actually believe its going to happen to us, probably not eh?

There must have been an issue relating to this sort of accident for them to commission an advert to counter it.

I`m sensing scorn towards these adverts, almost an attitude of 'wow i`m insulted, i knew that' But look at the big picture, there are people out there that ride exactly like Gearboxgeezer suggested, and if this advert saves 1 persons life its worth it.

let them keep advertising this stuff, there will always be those who 'don`t care' and look after themselves properly on the roads, but then again there will always be new riders who ride like knobs and paralyse themselves before their 18th birthday, if it reaches 0.01% of us then its worked.

I do indeed believe it could happen to me as I have experienced it twice and lost friends because of it. It stops me riding for the time it takes to get sorted and get back on the road. Hopefully you learn something from it. Whereas an advert like this has value for the few seconds it's on the screen, then it's forgotten. In my eyes it's like joining the Army and crying when you get sent off to war. You'd be an idiot to discount anothers propensity for stupidity.

Fair enough mate, sorry to hear you have lost friends through riding, i have only one riding buddy, but if anything happened to him i would be distraught.

I wasn't trying to turn this into some personal heroic sob story but I believe there are quite a few people in the same position. I do believe in educating the masses but I think that these adverts are aimed at the wrong audience.

We do ourselves no favours, but I honestly believe the biggest killers on our roads are bad drivers. Driver education should run all the way through the learning phase and tests, rather than the occasional couple of questions about other vehicles randomly added to a useless theory test.

I have actually kept my first helmet that was smashed in an accident, along with a hole in my shin. I kept it as a reminder to my mortality at a time when I thought I was invincible. It also looks cool. Thumbs Up

i agree with that, in an ideal world drivers should have to go pillion for an hour to experience what its like to be on a bike. Realistically thats NEVER going to happen for various insurance reasons (and a percentage of new drivers being killed before they passed their tests lol)

So, i would go along with something like a half hour video, and to MAKE them take notice, a comprehensive test at the end of the video which if they fail means no pass.

Agree in an ideal world but in the short term it will not happen.

Personally I've always said that new car drivers should undertake something like the CBT to get their licence. IMO the road part of the CBT would make them aware of how vulnerable and invisible a bike can be. In theory this should make them more aware and observant when in a car. I think this is a realistic objective and I'm surprised none of the bike/safety groups have thought/lobbied for this.

I think the bike test should be part of the car test, an all in one thing that would sort em out Twisted Evil

Is it just me or was that rider not going too quickly when he "evaded" the door but suddenly was going atleast 15mph faster when the camera switched to the "sliding down the road" frame.

Always assume that car door's going to open, always assume there's a pedestrian behind everything blocking your view, always assume the U-turn, right turn or the crazy fool on the sportsbike filtering at 50Mph when you go to filter yourself.

Well, works for London, anyway.

They did it with that other one, you know where its got the matey in the car and he looks, but dosnt see the bike the first time, it seems like the bike hits the car at like 100mph. Yet the second time he looks properly and sees the bike the bike is only doing like 20mph, lol.

Its good for the "shock" factor though, which cant be bad.

Wouldn't put off an existing biker I don't think. However it would make me think twice if I was new to it all and I saw that..
