Got from the MCN site, there's this video from TfL.
Having seen it once I think it'd put people off from commuting on 2 wheels.
Apparently that wasn't the aim, just make people think about safety.
Anyone any views?
P.S. Video is in flash. Tried playing this in firefox and failed. So if anyone has problems try it in IE. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I don't think so, I think people need a reminder every now and again, especially as they're right about people getting complacent near their homes.
I used to work in a market garden and, one day, we were taking the lorry through the country lanes to another field. Some bloke drove out of his driveway about five feet infront of the lorry and ended up on his side in the hedge. When the Police asked him why he pulled out, he said, 'Oh I always come straight out there, there's never anyone coming'. Tw@t.
Cheers

Rather than scare off existing motorcyclists (who by definition already appreciate their are risks) would it scare off new riders wanting to start riding/commute by motorcycle/scooter? ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Nope, doesn't scare me at all, and also shouldn't you always ride an open door width away from parked vehicles? ____________________ My Bikes in order:- Yamaha RXS100 / Suzuki X7 250 / Yamaha RD350LC / Kawasaki

i think we are all aware of the risks involved in riding a motorbike, especially on the clogged up roads of today. Yes we are 'aware' of them, but do we ever actually believe its going to happen to us, probably not eh?
There must have been an issue relating to this sort of accident for them to commission an advert to counter it.
I`m sensing scorn towards these adverts, almost an attitude of 'wow i`m insulted, i knew that' But look at the big picture, there are people out there that ride exactly like Gearboxgeezer suggested, and if this advert saves 1 persons life its worth it.
let them keep advertising this stuff, there will always be those who 'don`t care' and look after themselves properly on the roads, but then again there will always be new riders who ride like knobs and paralyse themselves before their 18th birthday, if it reaches 0.01% of us then its worked. ____________________ Present: 2017 KTM Super Adventure S

I wasn't trying to turn this into some personal heroic sob story but I believe there are quite a few people in the same position. I do believe in educating the masses but I think that these adverts are aimed at the wrong audience.
We do ourselves no favours, but I honestly believe the biggest killers on our roads are bad drivers. Driver education should run all the way through the learning phase and tests, rather than the occasional couple of questions about other vehicles randomly added to a useless theory test.
I have actually kept my first helmet that was smashed in an accident, along with a hole in my shin. I kept it as a reminder to my mortality at a time when I thought I was invincible. It also looks cool. |
