 |
|
What are those wires streached across the road for? , they cover the length of the road and are always in pairs,
years ago my unreliable dad said they were there to count cars (strange that they have all appeared after the schools have broken up for holidays) ,
I have always held a cynicism that the council put them there to guage how much plonking a speed camera there would make them, and although not an indicator of causality , three places that used to have such wires had speed cameras put in shortly after.
Previously with a car , without ABS you could go at them 40mph brake harshly and it would rip the wires up, though not on a bike due to locking up the front = pain (though my dad still revels in doing this in his older car).
Any suggestions?

I thought they were to check the speed of vehicles before a decision was made on traffic calming stuff? The two wires are a fixed distance apart so it times how long it takes to squash both of them. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

they are about 1 metre apart and lately going into work (10 miles into Manchester) I run over 6 of them.
Time to borrow a non ABS van and 'remove' them, seeing as traffic calming = camera always. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Presumably they measure the speed at which one wheel covers the distance between them. |

Speed calculation is the more likely as the gap between the wires is short enough that the front wheel will have passed over both wires before the rear wheels get to the 1st one.
if was counting traffic one of these comes along and really cocks the job up.

Yeah, they're for seeing if a gatso is necessary. I think they're hollow tubes that are compressed, giving an air pressure spike on a reader inside the box on the pavement. the diameter of the wheel doesn;t affecte it, and nor does wheelbase provided it's over about 70cm
The only thing that coulkd cock it up is a tractor with very low pressure tyres, as it may compress both at the same time. The ones around here are only a foot or so apart.

hmmm... they had one in my village not so long back before the speed bumps moved in
i think i will take the bolt cutters with me next time so i can snap the chain on them so i can carry a box away and dissect it
then we can all find out what those little yellow boxes do...
i will nick a wire as well ... then we can sus how they work too ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |
