What are those wires streached across the road for? , they cover the length of the road and are always in pairs,

years ago my unreliable dad said they were there to count cars (strange that they have all appeared after the schools have broken up for holidays) ,

I have always held a cynicism that the council put them there to guage how much plonking a speed camera there would make them, and although not an indicator of causality , three places that used to have such wires had speed cameras put in shortly after.

Previously with a car , without ABS you could go at them 40mph brake harshly and it would rip the wires up, though not on a bike due to locking up the front = pain (though my dad still revels in doing this in his older car).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I thought they were to check the speed of vehicles before a decision was made on traffic calming stuff? The two wires are a fixed distance apart so it times how long it takes to squash both of them.

Marki you are correct Thumbs Up
Its done every now and again, not just before enforcing traffic calming, i think its just like a regular survey type thingy.

they are about 1 metre apart and lately going into work (10 miles into Manchester) I run over 6 of them.

Time to borrow a non ABS van and 'remove' them, seeing as traffic calming = camera always.

But the distance between the front and rear tyres on cars isn't the same. Confused Confused Confused

Presumably they measure the speed at which one wheel covers the distance between them.

Which presumably changes depending on the size of the wheel - an old Mini or a new 38 tonne artic.

But that doesn't matter -- the Mini's wheel will have turned more times than the truck's, but the distance measured on the thread will be the same regardless of size.

Don't listen to any of these clowns.........

It's a very clever device that recognises the exact weight of a chav'd up Vauxhall Nova with four chav's inside, it then triggers a launch platform that instantaneously pops up infront of afformentioned nova launching it into nearby hedge......

What with the old people sat in cars at roundabouts and stuff all day?

Do they survey something?

I subscribe to the thought that they just count the traffic. It's practically impossible to measure speed like that, cause like someone else said the distance between the wheels differ on different cars.

Speed calculation is the more likely as the gap between the wires is short enough that the front wheel will have passed over both wires before the rear wheels get to the 1st one.

if was counting traffic one of these comes along and really cocks the job up.

Like I said above, these instruments rely on measurement of a single wheel's speed.

If you wanted to count traffic, one wire would be enough. Count everything and divide by two.

Of course the total will be slightly off because of vehicles with more than two axles; in that case, to correct for this possibility you'd have to get someone to spend a day or two counting the ratio of 2 axle to 3+ axle vehicles.

Yeah, they're for seeing if a gatso is necessary. I think they're hollow tubes that are compressed, giving an air pressure spike on a reader inside the box on the pavement. the diameter of the wheel doesn;t affecte it, and nor does wheelbase provided it's over about 70cm

The only thing that coulkd cock it up is a tractor with very low pressure tyres, as it may compress both at the same time. The ones around here are only a foot or so apart.

then we can all find out what those little yellow boxes do...

i will nick a wire as well Wink ... then we can sus how they work too Smile

You don't get many vehicles with a distance between the wheels of less than a metre. It starts when the front wheel goes over the first wire and stops when the same front wheel goes over the second wire.

Speed = Distance/Time and has no bearing on wheel size. Soooo....

if a wheel travels 1 metre in 0.05 seconds then its travelling at 72kph, about 45mph.

Blimey I just did the practically impossible Laughing Except the maths was probably wrong!

?!?!?! How can you not know if your car has ABS? stamp on the brakes and see if you skid. It entirely depends on the car, quite obviously an M reg mercedes or BMW is likely to have ABS, an M reg hyundai or kia is unlikely to. Confused

Hi
From what Ive seen, sometimes there is 1 wire sometimes there is 2.

I would have thought the 1 wire mesured volume, the other measured speed.

As far as measuring speed goes, the wire would measure the speed at which eash wire is squashed, it dont matter how big tyer size it, but becuase its a bigger tyre dosnt mean it will move a certain distance, uncless the whol car/lorry is going fater. Big wheels turn slower for faster speeds than little wheeles.

I guess it would have some kind of constaints, like if the time between squashes is greater than 1 second it resets itself, and only measures stuff in intervals of 2 seconds, as not to measure all 8 wheels of a lorry.

Luke

Double wires on roads measure speed and volume of traffic. Fact! Cool
