Does anyone know what the brass coloured units are that are in taps (like when you replace a washer, you take this unit out)

I need to know what to ask for when I buy some tomorrow, current ones have disintegrated

i'd call it the tap body, just ask for the inside brass bit ( i do if i dont know the name) either that or take it with you!

adapter taps, tap restorers or tap revivers all the same thing goto plumbers merchants as you'll pay a fortune at B & Q and the like

most will be universal in that they 'll fit basin taps (1/2") as is and you use the bushes provided to fit bath taps (3/4")

unless there very posh taps you may aswell buy new taps,
or a washer with a smaller hole Smile

Got replacements no problem. Wouldn't have been worth replacing the whole taps, and would have been an absolute nightmare to fit as there's little chance of getting underneath the sink.

I'm all too familiar with olives, from hydraulic braking systems. Often used in plumbing connectors and fittings

May i politely suggest you either do a bit of research on plumbing or bette still don't give answers to questions that you really have no idea about.

A olive is the ring used in inside a compression fitting to form a water tight seal, once it is used it cannot be reused or replaced with out replacing a piece of copper as well,it is either made of copper or brass.
And just for education purposes The part inside the tap which the OP was asking about is called a valve as was mentioned to him,
Taps come in 2 sizes..... wash basin and sink size is 15mm(1/2inch)
Bath comes in 22mmm(3/4) these are connected to the water supply via either plastic(shit) flexi(good) or copper pipe(the best)
they are joined by a swivel coupler this is were your Olive comes into play, they can can also by joined by a Yorkshire fitting(pre soldered) or a end feed(self solder).

yeah I know, I didnt know the part he was on about and as he said the copper bit inside the tap I assumed that he ment the compression fitting at the base, I do have an Idea of what Im on about so get off your high and mighty horse, theres no need for insults, My dad was a plumber so its not like I havnt learnt anything and after spending a fair few years in the building trade

Now whos on his high horse?

if you read the first part of my post i said

May i politely suggest

that was not meant as a knock down and was not meant to insult your vast and mighty knowledge of plumbing.

things change fast in the building trade and a lot may have changed since your dad or you was a plumber.

But in future i will not bother to give people advise and subjects i know about and will leave it to the brains like yourself.
After all i,m sure your "few years" has taught you a lot more about the building trade than my measly 24 years, i bow down to a true expert.

I bow down to your sarcasm, I believe we both touched a nerve

I respect your views as Ive read lots of your posts and have no reason not to respect you, This is just a dissagreement in my eyes,

You must also realise that when people say "my I politely suggest" it usually implys the "I'm right Your wrong full stop" hence the train spotter remark.(bit like the "now I don't believe you wanna do that, you wanna do it this way) (also usually gets a jolly good slap from the person hearing it up here) (not saying i'd be doing that to you Confused )
personally I'm big enough to appologise if I offended you
I offered my help, It was entirely his choice to accept the help,
I don't have a high horse, I try and be open minded and open speaking,

I know things have changed since my dads plumbing days but the basics havn't you have to admit the little copper things are called olives like I said, I just got confused with the part of the tap, simple mistake. If I'm wrong Ill appologise but the trouble with forums is that text can easlyly be missread, theres a slight lack of tone of voice.

Stu,, (Buys daz a virtual pint) Thumbs Up
