Would selecting '7th gear' be a test 'minor'?

I've got my DAS course booked - starting Sunday - and am really looking forward to it

When doing my CBT I did occasionally lose track of what gear I was in and would try clicking up a gear - only to find out there were no more left in the box!

Would this be classed as a 'minor' fault on test (assuming the examiner actually noticed it)?

I had difficulty in remembering what gear I was in on my DAS.

To be honest, just keep in it 4th in and about town, then down one for roundabouts and 2 for corners and side streets.

In built up areas, you are only going at 30-40mph so why try for top?

The only time I changed up was for national speed limits then you are going too fast for the examiner to see

You may get a minor for trying to up change unnecessarily, but trying to go round a bend / corner in the wrong gear definitely is a minor.

The examiner wont know what gear you are in . Dont forget he has to concerntrate on his own driving/riding and the road too Just dont go too fast or too slow. Select a gear to match your road speed and makes the bike happy

Don't worry about it. Once you're on the 500cc DAS bikes, they've got so much more power you'd have to be doing 70/80+mph before you'd run out of gears, and I hope you're not going to be going faster than that!

I did my test on a 125 and i missed quite a few gears on both tests i took, both times i didn't get any minors for gears. With the examiner being on another bike they would have to be concentrating very hard to notice that, too hard if they've got to concentrate on their riding too! Good luck!

Thanks for your input, guys - I'm glad the 500cc bike will require far less gearbox stirring, and I'd overlooked the fact that the examiner will not be peering over my shoulder

If your obviously in the wrong gear that might earn you a minor, otherwise I'm pretty sure it's not an issue. I have a habit of tapping the lever one more time after reaching first (just to be sure), and its not come up in any of my 4 attempts at the test.

Dont even worry about what gear the bike is in as long as it is pulling sufficiently I prefer to keep it in a high gear and pootle about in low revs .

I remember on the old GS125 I was riding I had to wring it's neck to get it going properly, because I'm too heavy for those stupid bikes. It was great fun, screaming along at top revs, it made everything feel so much faster.

I remember between my CBT and the beginning of my DAS last year, having great fun on a CG125.... Stirring the gears, and occasionally nailing the throttle in a vain attempt to get my lardy ar$e up to speed on NSL roads.

I've had numerous attempts on various bikes to engage an extra top gear that wasn't there, and also often click down an extra gear when stopping too, so nothing new there.


...so I wouldn't have thought that making the odd false gear change would be a major problem (as long as it doesn't compromise your riding safety), but as already mentioned I think it could be a potentially serious problem cornering in the wrong gear etc

On my DAS the examine was in a car so i doubt that he was able to watch the finer points of what i was doing with the controls such as changing up into a gear that wasnt there.

I dont think there is any reason to get into top gear on a test anyway.
