you wont be able to make a shifter like a car...cbr gearbox works differently. will just have to operate like a bikes...1 down/5up.

yeah, lmao,

but the angles and that for the linkage rod, would that be hard to make, and to make it change gear?

Nick, get it out of your head that it's going to work like a car. And start thinking about operating it with your foot and working it like a bike.

Then all you have to do is make a fucking long gear lever.

Capiche?

Why change gear?

I'd build a mk1 cart and just run it in 1st gear, then worry about changing gear once you've sorted out all the things you'll doubtless find are wrong when you actually run it.

Ah I see, thanks for that post. Cleared the whole situation up nicely.

And I agree with Bend, build up to a fully working kart. Be a shame to have a nice fangled gear linkage to find the frame snaps first time you hit 3k rpm.

Have a look at some kit car sites (locost builders etc), plenty of bike engined examples out there. It's a simple linkage using universal joints most of the time.

but you didnt decide to build one cos it was easy did you?

linkage can be worked out once youve made up a frame and positioned your engine...foot operated will likely be easiest option and should only require minimal work if you look at the way it works on a bike.

Gear linkages are dead easy to sort out once you've got the thing bolted to a chassis that's halfway decent. You just need to sort out the linkage directions etc. Racecar linkages are never straightforward but there are loads of ways around it.

It's not that hard, you just need to get it built up first then approach the problem when you know what you've got to overcome. Wink

Nick you should've asked me. (he knows me)

Look at a bike, any bike (not your minimoto) and look at the gear lever, see how it is connected to the engine (Well the crank casing etc) by a rod that moves when you click the lever up and down. What you would do is have something like this rod but longer going to the front where you have a hand (or foot) lever connected to it that you move up and down (1 down 5 up) like gears on a bike.

I have seen this today on my friends old kart that is rusting in his field.

I am gonna build something like this at some point, but it'll have a turbo'd, supercharged, NOS'd, bored, tuned ZZR1400 engine in it. Fo Shizzle Wink Or Two CR500 engines Laughing

You're going to build a bike engined kart and the thing that worries you most is the gear lever? You have a lot to learn.

Yup see below, both at Santa Pod.

All black is at '2002 Ultimate Street Car' - CBR600 powered about 90bhp. (me driving Very Happy )

The red/white one '2005 Santa Pod' (side fairings not fitted in pic) - Fireblade powered, Turbo, NOS about 240bhp.

Thumbs Up

Right ive got a general idea. You couldent have a "gearstick" persay that you would see in a car, however you COULD have a stick attatched to a massive gear linkage, pull the stick back into first (only back and forward movement in the stick) then push forward into 2nd, forward into 3rd, so on and so forth, simple.
