My cousin just sold me his 94 Suzuki gs500e. Its been sittin up for @ 2 years and Im having trouble getting it fired up. It only has Around 6000 miles on it so to me it fairly new right? I bought a new battery and plugs as well but it still wont turn over. When i turn it on I get all the lights as if all is good but when I push the stat button with the engine in the on position I get nothing.

I expect someone will be along shortly to point you in the right direction.
It's a process of elimination.
I had exactly the same problem with my bike. All the lights would come on but it wouldn't fire up. Fortunately for me the problem was simple and cheap to fix. I needed to replace a little saftey switch that allows the bike to start when the clutch is pulled in and it had become stiff with age. I did just put the wires together while I was waiting for the switch to arrive so that I could still use the bike.
Hopefully your problem is just as simple.
Good luck.

Its a personal thing but before you do anything else I would take the spark plugs out and put a bit of oil in each cylinder. If its got one put the bike on the center stand, knock it into gear and just turn the back wheel slowly by hand. Like I said, its not something you have to do, I just like to know that the engine will turn without putting it under too much stress after sitting for a couple of years.

All kind of generic but should help to start tracking the problem.

Is there any sounds from the bike when you press the starter button? If you hear a click then the circuit is fine but the starter is knackered in some way.

Turn the headlight on and press the starter, does the headlight dim? Yes, then its possible theres a short in the starter circuit or the starter motor has failed. No, a broken wire or bad connection or a switch in the starter circuit isn't working.

All the fuses ok? Sometimes the starter will have its own seperate one.

Find a wiring diagram.

Test the starter button with a multimeter. Same for the kill switch, make sure both turn on and off.

Is the neutral light on? Try changing to first then back to neutral.

Try with the side stand up and down, test the continuity of the side stand switch, does it turn on off?

Try with clutch in and out? Test the continuity of the switch if fitted.

If all those pass ok then you need to check power is getting to the starter relay. If power is getting there but nothing is happening then the fault is either with the relay or the starter.

If you wanted to you could connect the live wire from the battery directly to the switched side of the starter relay (the wire that goes to the starter motor) just to check the starter will turn. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS!!

The GS does have a reputation for corrosion problems, so I would check all the wiring for corrosion or loose links.

Have the kill switchs have been checked out?

Is the bike in neutral?

Also does the GS500 the same as other Suzuki's where you have to hold in the clutch lever when you press the starter button?

Retard.

Just to answer a few questions:

No the GS5 does not have a clutch switch, it does have a sidestand switch though Laughing

Your fuses are located behind the right hand side tail panel, towards the tank end. Pop your seat and undo the bolt at the top (on the seat lock mechanism holder) and undo the screw holding the tail panel to the mid tail peice. Give it a tug, its off. Fuses are now easy to get to.

Is there a noise when you hit the starter motor? Do you hear a click and then nothing, do you head the bike turning over and it just doesnt fire?

Have you got petrol - if its been standing for years, the odds are it wont have been left with petrol in it, and if it has - its going to be useless.

Answer those questions and we will be able to help you further!

Are you trying to start it whilst the side stand is down? My GS500 had a cut out so that the engine would stop if you put the side stand down. It might be the same that if the side stand was down, it might not start? Just a thought.

Surely the side stand switch only works if it's in gear. Wink

Not if the switch is faulty.

Killswitch is on the right hand bar, right at the top.

Its the red switch and it needs to be down at the bottom - thats the on position.

Also even if the sidestand switch is faulty, it will start in neutral Thumbs Up

Does the engine turn over? Do you hear a click when u press the button to start? what happens exactly

There you go Method, it does nothing.

If your struggling to find the kill switch I can only suggest you get someone with a bit more knowledge. to take a look

Yeah, especially if one is loose and earths on you...

Just wanted to make sure he means that he gets nothing at all, compared to just cranking over and "getting nothing" etc...

Definately sounds like a killswitch thing mate. The killswitch stops the engine from even turning over on a GS5, so would the sidestand - but if its in neutral then it doesnt matter.
