say you were following a car doing 55 and you wanted to overtake, what gear would you use? in the car I use 3rd then go up to 4th at maybe 65. Would I do the same on my bike? I would use the rev counter for gear changing when I finally get it on the road, but it hasn't got one. All I really want to know is how high I can rev it without killing it, so any help would be appreciated.

I just rev as high as possible until the acceleration runs out. Then change up.

Assuming that you're in 6th, you would probably need to change down to 4th...or something...

If i was cruising in a nice economy gear i'd knock it down a couple to reach the powerbank, then open the throttle all the way to overtake. change gear when you need to (about 10k) and then change up again after. it's not like gear changing takes long so it's not dangerous to do at any time

i usually cruse in 5th so id go down to 3rd i hit 65ish at the red line in 3rd plus it gives you the power to pull off in 4th with no lag

Does bouncing off the rev limiter damage the engine excessively? I was thinking that when you really wanted to accelerate hard you could just rev it till you felt the limiter and then change up, but I wouldn't want to wreck it.

umm yes as you pass the red-line u should hear the engine knocking besides going pst the red line wont help as the nsr hits optimum power at 10,500 rpm

if you dont mind seing you piston flying through the top of the engine then bye all means red line away Confused

From about 55 if you're following a car, I usually kick down twice from 5th and pull the throttle back just after I've pulled right over (double checking there's no lorries etc coming the other way before you commit) and take it right up to 10500-11000, maybe just blip onto the red line., though you shouldn;t need to. Most cars are that shocked by such a little thing flying past any how there's no time for them to react, then just accelerate as normal, you've got the advantage oer the cars already.

As long as you do it confidently you won;t have a problem, just don't hesitite.

Hi

In theory the red line is where the engine is safe to go to on a regular basis. Going a little into the red will not do much harm, but is generally fairly pointless as the engine will be a long way past peak power, and power will be dropping away rapidly.

One thing to watch out for is whether the rev counter is actually giving you a true reading. Accelerate really rapidly (only first gear really) and I would suspect that the revs will go up faster than the rev counter shows (same with speedos, as you can probably brake very hard and be back accelerating with the speedo still dropping)

All the best

Keith
