I finally learnt how to corner today (counter steer lean etc.) and have been going far too fast but my damned little RS has trouble on steep hills Sad

Living in sheffield it's hard to avoid them but does anybody have any tips? the only way I could get up Hagg Hill (one of the steepest roads in the world ever!) was with a push from a friendly van driver, no matter how many revs I tried to give it and how fast/slow I let out the clutch I got nothing but crumbling at about 1.5k revs and being overtaken by irate car drivers.

HELP MeEEEEEE!

apply the rear brake, engage first gear then release the clutch until you get the bite point then give more throttle and slowly release the rear brake.

works for me and we've plenty of steep hills here in scotland.

i only have a 50cc and there are a few steep roads near me i just keep it in a loew gear first or second that works for me and the way i think of it is you can go as fast or as slow as you want because you have payed your road tax.

Personally I'd engage 1st gear before applying the rear brake because you'll fall off. Laughing

Just give the bike more revs, as said above

(Assuming you are stopped)
Engage 1st gear
Hold on rear brake
Get the clutch to the biting point
Give the bike more than 1500 revs, you will want around 4-5000 revs
Then release the rear brake.

the bike needs 5k revs just to start usually Wink What happens is I do the above, rev it high release the clutch and the revs just die. Can't understand what I'm doing wrong.

your letting the clutch out too quickly, let the clutch out until the bike starts moving and the revs start dropping, then hold the clutch there and start accellerating. Then let the clutch out all the way.

It sounds like your revving, then more or less dumping the clutch so it jumps forward and the revs drop until the bike bogs down

You need to ride the clutch, letting it out very slowly, for a fair distance up the hill.

An RS will easily start on any hill, so it's not the bike.

Keep the revs up in the power band Thumbs Up It normally involves horrid noises on 2-strokes. The way back from rivvy has absolutely shit hills on the route, and it's just a matter of nailing the throttle.

God that sounds scarey.
Simple balance of clutch at biting point and just enough revs is all it takes.
There is no "required " number to see on the noise-o-meter dial.

You just need some practice in a place away from traffic (unless the clutch or something else is about knackered!)
This is something that in time you will do without having to think about it - like putting one foot in front of the other to start walking.

You will get the hang of it, i had the same prob when i stared on a two stroke. " strokes do your head in on hills though. Just dont give up, know its frustrating. use your back break more so you dont roll down the hill and try not to fall off.

Practice, practice and practice. I was having a mare doing hill starts on my DAS but my instructor kept making me do em, over and over. Once i nailed it, that was it, no worries now. O, and start on smaller hills, then progress up Very Happy

you should be able to pull away on a flat smoothly at about 2000 revs. not easy mind! but practice that. then go onto hills. on a very steep hill you may need to rev as high as 6k to pull away smoothly. but 5k for anything but near vertical should be more than enough.

sounds like you have poor clutch control. try practising letting it out progressively. you are allowed to slip the clutch...it is designed for this.
