Nothing to do with manners. All to do with choice.
I find it inconvenient, unnecessary and a complete waste of my time to remove gloves, glasses, helmet, put on glasses just so some minimum-wage muppet can have their thirty seconds of power. I don't need to take it all off just for a few quids worth of petrol, so I don't - that's my choice.
If garages want to get pissy with bikers, then fine - I'll cause them some equally petty inconvenience on my way out. It may not be big and it may not be clever but by that stage I'm past giving a toss about the garage, it's staff or its customers. ____________________ "That's it. When I first saw this subject discussed months ago, I thought "What is all the fuss about"? I used to take off my gloves and helmet prior to filling/paying most of the time anyway.
Now I commute on the bike rather than just ride for pleasure, I am riding "to the clock" if you like. Several minutes taking things off and putting them back on again is just a pain in the arse - both for me and for the driver who has just pulled in behind me who thought that, as he saw me coming out of the shop, I'd be on my way in a couple of seconds - rather than two minutes. So, I generally don't bother now, unless I'm buying more than just petrol. To be fair, I've never been asked to take it off either (Shell, BP, Texaco and Tesco garages).
As for Toby R - I agree. If it's raining I definately wouldn't want to take my stuff off. I'm nice and dry and the last thing I want to do is disturb things and have water droplets going down my back or up my sleeves as I fiddle with it. ____________________ Current bike: Kawasaki Z750S |

I have to fill up daily so when it happened to me afew months back I created havock when I went in to pay, they had to stand there and take a bollocking before I paid up, took me ages to put my gear back on infront of the kiosk.
They havn't asked me since! ____________________ don't take it easy 'ride it like you stole it' |

Ask them if they have anywhere to put your helmet, but also inform them that if they drop it, it will need to be replaced before you leave.
Don't forget to tell them about the cost of replacing it aswell.
Lay it on extra thick, they can't refuse to serve you cos you've got a tank full they need you to pay for! ____________________ don't take it easy 'ride it like you stole it' |

Drop the hose.
Drop your Visor.
Drop it into 1st.
And fuck off to a place more civilised.
Would the arses pay out if one of their 'Un-Helmeted' clients carelessly spewed diesel fuel over the floor so you picked up on your tyres and skid on their dirty filthy forecourt?
Well, would they PUNK?
And:
NEVER..... pay for air either.
Use the places that 'STILL' give it out free.
I was in Italy last week on holiday.
They fill-up your car, wash your windscreen and hope you have a nice day.
What the fuck happened to British Manners?
Did it go out the bloody window when PC came in?

A stitch in time saves nine.
One prevention is worth a hundred cures.
Both are old-fashioned sayings, from a time when we had British Manners i think you'd agree.
Making sure that everyone knows you'd have to take off your helmet could be seen as taking the temptation of not paying away from you, which would be virtuous would it not?.
Anyway, I don't think it's too much to ask.
I don't think it's the attendants' policy, so I don't think they should be persecuted.
I don't have to use busy, impersonal petrol stations, and I don't live a life where 2 minutes is an unbearable loss from my day.
Cities really do cause problems...
Dropping a petrol hose on a forecourt is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard though.
If the French wanted to do it, they'd get organised, get 200 bikers with nearly-empty tanks to pull up at the start of the station's rush-hour, and take their time, each going through the motions of taking off their helmets and filling up.
The time lost, enmity of car users towards the company and blamelessness of the bikers would have Shell and BP and all of the supermarkets changing their minds inside a week, I'd bet. ____________________ Never contend with a man who has nothing to lose. |
