Clutch on my Mito 125 (2000) has been slipping now and then, took it to a bike shop they said first thing to look at/replace is the clutch fluid, is this just like changing gearbox oil? I've bought some new stuff to go in, just not sure how to go about it.... any help would be thanked...

I presume you have a hydraulic clutch then.
If so it will almost certainly need brake fluid to operate.
There should then be a bleed nipple somewhere near the gearbox to bleed the system.

Clutch fluid?

Is it a hydraulic clutch or does it have a cable operated clutch? I suspect cable.

I think they must mean gearbox oil.

What oil did you buy exactly?

Yeah, it's just the gearbox oil.

What have you bought exactly?

It helps if you warm it up when you remove the old stuff.

Have you checked the clutch cable is adjusted properly? If the biting point is set too far out from the bar then it may never fully engage.

My first thought was the clutch cable, as i can't make it any looser and the bite is pretty much the end of the lever, but i thought i'd get a mechanics opinion too. Its 4dot brake and clutch fluid, all 250ml of it.

I'l do the gearbox oil when i can get some to replace it.

If you are out of adjustment on the clutch cable and it's still slipping, then most likely you will need to replace the clutch friction plates. Changing the oil is probably a waste of time.

finpos.

You can adjust the cable at the clutch end with a couple of spanners, then use the lever for fine adjustment.

It's probably sensible to change the oil anyway.
Unlikely, but you may need to replace the friction plates.

Next time take it to a different bike shop! Sounds like they are not to clever there at all.

When does it slip? When you nail it or in higher gears and applying power?

It only slips now and then, its very very tempermental. Generally anywhere above 5 thousand revs with the throttle fully open. Its fine pulling away and changing gears, just when i put on the power.

Cagiva 125's are mechnical clutches. If it's slipping I'd drop the gearbox oil and replace it with some proper two-stroke gear oil at the same rating as in your manual.

"light gear oil" is normally what's used.

Cagiva clutches are very strong and it's rare for them to need changing.

Well i dropped the old gunk out from the gearbox put some new fresh oil in, main difference is, i can actually find neutral when the bike is stationary now! which was worth it for me anyway.. cause NOTHING would make it go into neutral, not letting the clutch out slightly, not revving it slighty it would just not do it, and now it taps in first time Thumbs Up
but, the clutch is still slipping Thumbs Down
Suspected cable problem, as there is no free play either end, so i can't actually make it looser.. anyone know where i can get a clutch cable?

thanks

If there is no free play in the cable then you need to loosen it as its too tight and that might be causing it not to engage properly, and therefore slip. Use the adjuster at the lever end to give it a tiny bit of slack.

Then see.

MME Motorcycles in London, MitoMondo and CMPRacing all have mito clutch cables available off the shelf. Google for contact details.

If the clutch is operating then it's unlikely the cable needs replacing. Generally they just stretch or snap completely.
