Sorry about this, but I just feel like I need to write something down, I've been at home on my own the last few nights and I feel like I'm going mad.

Basically my GF's waters broke on thursday night, but she's only just gone 24 weeks pregnant. We've had doctors round and what not but it doesn't do much to ease what I'm thinking. They've told us the baby weighs around 600g ATM (about 1lb 2) and is looking fine, but they've said that they think she'll go into labour sooner rather than later. Problem is they've told us they dont really have the facilities to keep it alive for that long, and that she'll need to be transferred somewhere. I'm worrying all the time that she'll go into labour and we'll lose it. It's our first and it isn't really working out the way we wanted it. I've also gotta find us somewhere to live by the end of next month, and this hasn't really helped any of that. I've been up there with her every day as long as I can, but it's really draining me. I haven't been eating very well or sleeping properly and just cant seem to stop drinking. Going on the bike isn't helping because I'm constantly aching.

Sorry about all that, just wanted to get it out, I've been on my own since thursday night and just keep sitting here thinking about it.

Cheers mate.

Just wanted to get it out really. I cant seem to get hold of any of my mates and I've spent the last few nights sat indoors on my own.

Dont worry Wink

Basildon Hospital is shite, they dont have the correct facilities (Neonatel ITU) to help ventilate such a small and premature baby. Chances are that the baby will be transfered to Great Ormund Street until fit enough to be released home.

Whilst there, the parents are offered accomodation (and someone even said a small wage to compensate for a lack of income whilst in hospital) to make the whole hospital thing more bearable.

The important thing is to be strong and support the GF as she may be blaming herself. You also need support at this time too.

Good luck fella Thumbs Up

She already is mate, she just seems to spend her whole time crying and every time I leave she'll be even worse, it breaks my heart when I walk away from her to see her like that, but there's nothing either of us can do.

Cheers, Thumbs Up

Ask the doctor to sit down and properly explain to you what is likely to happen, what hospital they will transfer the baby to etc.

As regards somewhere to live, are you on the council waiting list? If not, get up there now and do it. If you are, then tell the council that the baby will probably be arriving earlier than expected. This should move you up the queue.

Best of luck with it all, and look after yourself as well as your girlfriend.

Thumbs Up

Tough one for you. Having lots of time to think isnt helping, try to plan stuff to do in the evenings when youre home alone , sitting thinking will just make it worse. Like Sadie said , a bit more info will help a lot, like is your gf on medication now that will help the baby if it comes early? I dont know what will happen in your case, obviouslly, but lots of babies born at 24 weeks go on to live healthy lives these days, and the chances of this are higher when the medical team know theyre likely to be early. I shall knit a couple of prem bits in case theyre needed. Good luck.

She's had 2 steroid injections to help it's lung growth, and she's on antibiotics.

I got off the phone to her about 10 minutes ago and she was saying that they had trouble finding the heartbeat. They're getting a doctor to go and have a look at her, but I cant go now as I've had a few drinks (about all there is to do).

Detecting a fetal heart beat is quite a difficult thing to do at the best of times, it all depends on the position of both mum and baby. Its all to do with conduction of electricity through muscle, if the baby is nt against the mums belly, ie turned or rolled, then the contact area is reduced and the signal that is seen or heard is also reduced.

By telling your GF this is probably just aggrevating the situation.

Stop drinking as a reaction to your misery. It will do absolutely no good at all, and will result in situations such as not being able to be there when needed.

I'm not trying to be harsh, believe me.

Do you have someone who could drive you to the hospital?

No not really.

My mum and dad are away, I cant get hold of any of my mates and her mum and dad are up there with her, I'm going to ring her now though and see whats happening, if it's getting worse I'll just have to get a taxi.

Thumbs Up

Just spoke to her, she seems to have calmed down a bit and the doctor has literally just turned up. I'm glad that she's got her mum and dad there with her at the moment, but she said she'll ring me once the doctors gone.

I'm not pissed, just had a few drinks so I'd be well over the limit.

Luckily I've managed to get through to a mate of mine and he's on his way round, he can take me up there if need be.

Thumbs Up

My cousin was born at 26 weeks - worrying time i remember but all turned out fine (she's about 11 now i think Rolling Eyes ). Infact, she was transfered from one hospital to another i seem to remember.

Why not ask what happens if baby turns up sooner rather than later. Write down all them questions that you got running around in your head and when you see the doc ask him/her (they wont mind/ bite).

If there expecting baby soon they will have things in place as to transfering mum & baby to an appropriate place - but ask - its better to ask than let it get to you

My little boy was prem so they gave me steroids to mature his lungs as he was early. He was in scbu (special care baby unit) for three weeks and then when he regained his birthweight we were allowed home. He's 5 now and is perfectly normal compared to other kids his age, even though he was a lot shorter to begin with. As has been said there is so much they can do for a premi baby of 24weeks upwards now. I'm sure your baby will be just fine Karma

Good advice there about speaking to the doctors, you need to know exactly what is going on and where they may be transferred to.

Thanks for all the comments and PM's, they've been really helpful, Thumbs Up. This last week hasn't been particularly enjoyable.

There's been some good news today though. Seeing as she hasn't been leaking any blood (that was quite a regular occurence) for the last 2 days the doctors have decided to let her come home! She's so happy, as am I, although it's quite obvious that she'll be doing absolutely NOTHING for the next few weeks.

Many thanks for your comments, Thumbs Up.

Glad everything has settled itself for the moment, it may be a rocky next couple of weeks. Just relax and take it easy, dont over excert, take plenty of rest and dont worry as this will elevate any stress on the body.

It must have been a very worrring time, no body expects to have problems in the pregnancy.

Hope you three are ok and all the best Thumbs Up

Well as ever things haven't turned out as planned, Thumbs Down.

She phoned me at 7 this morning in tears saying that she's been bleeding again in the night and the consultant has said she cant come home. She's booked in for a scan at King's College tomorrow morning as apparently there a little concerned over the babies growth.

I feel like I'm going insane, one minute it's all looking good and now this.
