just to make sure (better safe than sorry Very Happy ) re-filling the coolant back in the engine has to be done with the engine running and the coolant cap off rite? filling up the filler tank to max letting the engine run up to temp and re-fill to the max when the level drops(but not letting it empty) untill the coolant returns to the tank then top up to the max mark??

it doesnt have to be done while running,
its probly better to do it while its not,
fill it up go for a ride(don't thrash it just yet Mr. Green )
let it get to full temp, then come back, let it sit for 10 mins so the radiator isn't under pressure, then retop it up, that little run should have forced all the air out of the system,

Sounds like yer waterpump or thermostat is dodgy. Waterpump should be engaging at 60 deg C-ish and start pumping.

i think iv got to fill the radiator not the expansion tank. what do i do? fill the radiator to the top, start the bike then top up as required? its the same as car coolant filling.

If radiator has a cap... Mito doesn't so not a clue on SuperCity... then yes, fill radiator, fill expansion chamber, take it for a run.

Generaly advice is to fill the rad, and fill run the engine up to temp with the rad cap off until the thermostat opens and the level drops in the rad. Run for another minute or so after the level drops, then top up the rad, put the cap on, take it for a ride, let it cool, check the level again.

You don't just fill it and put the cap on.

its all done now, but temp is sitting at approx 79*c/80*c is this normal?

whats the normal running temp for a 2stroke engine?

also just looking at the engine from the clutch side and just happen to notice that the oil to the carb from the pump was all but empty Exclamation i managed to get all the air out the system and ran the engine again and all is well Thumbs Up no air bubbles just oil Very Happy

Take it that's idling sat still??

Running and on the road, around 60 to 70 degrees is usual for a Cagiva bike with their oversized rads...

Sat still outside idling for an hour should see it hit 80 deg and keep on rising. When bike is sat still, there is no airflow moving thru the radiator to remove the heat from the water, so temp will continue to climb til it gradually overheats.

Take it out for a ride and see if it levels off back down to middle of the guage-ish once there's some air moving thru the radiator.

Dude, every day you try something new.

Firstly, that tank you were filling is just the expansion tank. It’s an non-essential piece of kit that just gets in the way. All it does it catch any coolant that might spurt out if your temp exceeds 90 degrees.

To fill a supercity.

Measure out the correct volume of fluid. (read manual). Tighten drain plug on LH casing. Make sure all hoses are attached. Fill the system from the LH rad. When you can see the water at the neck of the filler, squeeze all the pipework coming from the cylinder to remove air locks. Your coolant level should drop and you should only have a few hundred mls of fluid left.

Put the cap back on and tilt the bike 45 degrees to each side. Top up to base of neck. Tilt bike 45 degrees to the right. Top up system. Run bike and make sure coolant starts to circulate at 65 degrees.

Check coolant levels once the system has reached ~ 80 degrees and both rads are warm.

The split rad system complicates the filling process.

Normal running temps. 65 degrees in winter and 70-75 in summer. 80 degrees in traffic and I always try to cool it down at above 80. You can mask of 10-20% of your rad in winter and still run fine.

Oil feed – Good way to mess up your engine. Follow the manual’s instructions on how to bleed it. Bubbles in that feed line lead to trouble.

Oh, if you think I’m pedantic over the filling procedure, it’s only because I’ve had it apart soo many times I know the easiest way to get them back up again.

when refilt the system i just filled the rad on left hand side to the neck undid the drain screw to make sure the water was coming through which it did(drippling on to the floor) then ran the engine for a 5 mins on idle (@2,000rpm) with the rad cap off, the pipe from the cylinder was warming up (bout 70 degrees) and so did both rads. then i put the rad cap on and took it up and down the road a few times(im not insured so couldnt take it far) i looked at the temp gauge it was at about 76/77 degrees but that was from idling a 5 mins when the temp was at 80 degrees.

the expansion tank... can i just empty it totaly (it had coolant already in there when i bought the bike)
