For any of those that can speak Japanese or are learning (kawashima, siggi et al), do you have any good sources, references or text books that you can reccomend for me to learn from?

I have decided that I want to get a job in recruitment in Japan, but need to learn some basic japanese before i can get any headway. (its for recruiting gai jin into firms, rather than working with japanese candidates. But i will still need japanese to consult with human rescources and managers etc)

My best mate is moving to Japan in January, and i would quite like to head over myself in 8-12 months time.

Any help or reccomendations will be gratefully recieved!

Kaben Thumbs Up

i will check those out on amazon/ebay etc. I have looked at language books in the past and found it very hard to find a decent one that is easy to learn from.

Having the ISBN for those is usefull, cheers Siggi Thumbs Up

Always wanted to learn japanese.

How long did it take you to pick it up Siggi? Would you say you've become fluent?

I've got a little program on my pc that's good for starting out. I used it for a while and picked up the basics. PM me if you want to give it a shot. It's only a little file.

Edit: Ok it's actually about 50Mb so forget what I said... Laughing

Easy or hard, depends on how your brain is wired. It's a very limited language in terms of it's 'mechanical structure', which makes it easy to master on a 'mechanical level'. It's ordered, logical and precise.

Unfortunately that limits it, which is why context and nuance are used to allow full communication. And it's the context and nuance that are hard to master.

That's just the speaking and listening. The various alphabets are another layer of complexity entirely. Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana and Romajii.

Kanji is the pictogram alphabet, and you need at least 2000 to be able to read a shite tabloid.

Hiragana is the Japanese phonetic alphabet, used for native Japanese words.

Katakana is the Japanese phonetic alphabet used for foreign words.

Romajii is the western alphabet used for Japanese words.

Whereas the english language is like something thats been written on a public loo wall, changed and been added to repeatedly, the most recent changes are such because of illiterate chavs.

Kaben,

I just found 'Teach Yourself Japanese' on my PC in WMA format - I don't mind 'lending' you a copy if your interested. It looks like it's just basic things, but I've never used it.

Sorry for offtopic but please let me know for knowledge.
What happens if you come to japan and unfortunately become sick, would medical expense cost as 5 times as us(japanese)?
(we pay 20% of total, 80% will be payed from insurance)
Would it be easy to find apartment house after you come here?
Many of owners of rented houses are not kind to non-japanese and I'm worrying about that.

I would take out personal health insurance to cover me incase something bad happens to me and i will use a gai jin letting agency to sort out a flat/apartment. Ideally i will meet some nice japanese/gai jin people to move in with. I met some when i was travelling and stayed in there apartment for a week in Tokyo! saved me a bomb, and i just cooked for them- im not a bad cook you see.

I will secure a job before i arrive in japan, so hopefully my employer may even help sort out accomodation.

i understand your concerns though, and thankyou Smile

Icey: cheers for that offer, i may take you up on it. im just downloading a "sample" of a language package from the internet. I think its called rossetta stone.

In Manderin three tonalities of "ma" mean three VERY different things, I can only remember two of them.

Ma - with an open sounding a is Mother
Ma - with a more nasal lower tone means horse

Laughing

Got to be careful not to muddle those two up!

Ma, MA, MAH,..... music makes me so hard makes me say oh my lord. (sorry couldn't resist a bit of Hammer Time)

I live out in Hong Kong for 21 years and Madarin is super tonal so you have to watch out, but cantonese, if you say it loud enough and aggressive enough, and spit at the end of your sentence, the message will get through...

Laughing Laughing

I had a couple of Chinese friends at school, one preferred to speak Mandering, the other Cantonese. I remember after the Cantonese friend had been over with her mum my friend's mother said-
[chinese accent]
"Dose Cantonese are so loud, all dey do is shou' an spi', i' such an ugly dirty language I HATE speaking i'!"
[/chinese accent]

Then stomped off into the kitchen to make fry some more cashew nuts Drooling
