HI most beholden advicey people ! Wink

I am looking to buy a car to replace my written-off Freddie Frogster mobile
Have seen a Rover, P reg, diesel
Looks nice.. v good cond, going to take it further for a test drive and stuff

I am not very 'carsey' Confused But I do like the overall feel of the thing, colour (most important Wink ), and interior
It passed it's MOT last week, and all seems in order...

What is putting me off is the diesel aspect
I don't know why.. in my head it says 'old man'
BUT I do commute a lot to work, and I know diesel is v economical ??

Furthermore, I do not know ANYONE who has a Rover.
Are they reliable ?

Thanks in advance Gurus ! Surprised

What model of Rover is it?

With diesel, you only start to save money when you do enough miles to offset the extra cost of the fuel and usually the extra amount you pay for a diesel engined car over petrol. It may end up costing you more, so do some sums Smile

Hi

As above, although often a diesel also requires more frequent servicing.

All the best

Erm.. it's like a Turbo 2.0, 5 door
or something Surprised
I don't know techie stuff

I drive about 140 miles a week

I have been to people that want the same money than this car is up for...but for much older, cra**y petrol engine cars
SO I thought it looked good ? Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

My old company car was a Rover45 Turbo Diesel 2.0.

It did have a lot of little (but expensive) problems. Mostly to do with split accelerator cable or turbo hose. Also some nice little engine management faults. A total of 6 times in the garage (for more than 2 days) on top of normal servicing meant that I did not rate it.

I have also had a Rover 414sli which required nothing more than a new alternator (it had done 100k miles) in 25k miles of driving. So they can be ok. It had had an engine rebuild before I got it though Sad

Another point worth considering is parts. They seem to be ok for the new models at the moment, but with Rover no more I would not be so sure about the future. I personnally would not consider a Rover on this basis alone.

That said, with many people thinking as I do, you might just grab a bargain. If you do go ahead try and get a low mileage one (<50k)

Good Luck, most of the time its just that; luck.

So 140 miles a week, about 7000 a year. Say 650 litres (being generous at 45mpg) means it costs £670 in fuel. Compared to a petrol car costing £850 a year (basing it on 35mpg). A saving of about £180, minus the extra road tax costs and higher servicing costs (realistically not much with the small mileage you do).

Personally I find diesel horrible slow revving things, better suited as boat anchors, so would want a lot more savings than that.

Not sure, but generally diesels were more expensive (people assume the engines last longer, not really true anymore). Suspect the reason it is cheap is related to the comment by natv4 with people not wanting to buy a Rover.

All the best

For mileage wise, I was getting about 9p per mile (average) when prices were 88ppl.

The Rovers are not great diesel engines, they are of the old type, though the turbos aren't bad. They still feel slow to go compared to the petrol cars.

Our fleet rovers never really did that well, longevity wise. We switched to peugeot 307's not long after I traded mine for a bike.

We have thought, and chatted with others about this
There is a dealer in Leicester who has years of parts left that he bought up. I would be keeping this car about 3-4 years at the price it is costing

At the end of the day, I want and need a bargain
As you say, a lot of it is down to luck..what isn't
My last car... had a bit of rust, didn't look that great.. cost me 400 notes, drove like a dream !!
Not one moment of trouble..rain, sleet, ice, snow, belting sun... drove the same every day
Luck in the bucket load Surprised

I would be more pished off spending thousands on a car that turned out to be a complete shed than a few hundred

Thanks for the input

Not the ultimate performance, just the horrible way (to me) they they produce power. Slow revving, and promise a lot at low revs but fail to deliver at high revs.

All the best

I used to have a 218td and was well impressed with it, performance was very good for what it was had all the extra's and never missed a beat.I don't remember it ever giving less than 45mpg usually around 52mpg unless driven hard. It had the same engine in as peugeot 1.8 diesel, not sure if the 2.0 is based on a peugeot motor though.

I'd have another as long as the price was right. Thumbs Up

diesels are good for low revs on the motorway

i had a 1.7 diesel fiat uno and it was ins group 5 i think which is the same as a 1.3 petrol car i think

but was more comfy than a similar 1.3 petrol car on the motorway

Dont be put off by it being a diesel.

My VW Bora admitidly is newer and the top of the range sport model but theres not many equivelent petrol cars under 2.3 that match it for performance. Wink

e.g its performance is pretty much the same as the new BMW320. Laughing

Dad's 'weekday' car is a Rover Diesel, a 1.8 TD I think.

I also have a Diesel, a 1.9TD Citreon Xantia. Dad's car is more responsive and quicker than mine, but the turning circle is lousey.

I like having a diesel car, it's cheap to run - I get over 500 miles to a tank (65 litre tank, £55 ish to fill up). It does everything I need from a car. It sits happily for miles and miles at 85-90 with no difference to fuel consumption. Plus it's indestructible, I'm up to 184000 miles with no engine problems.

My dad currently has a rover 620 diesel of some description as a courtesy car from our friendly country garage, N reg.

When they gave it to him they told him to be careful and not take it on the motorway. Every gearchange has a horrendous clunk, and its generally a total dog.

150 000 miles, and feels it.

Modern diesels bare no comparison to the old ones. The new ones use high pressure (1000 bar) direct injection. This means there is not a lot of difference between these and petrol (this includes fuel economy, you don't get the extra performance without loosing the economy).

The Rovers are all older type engines. They are utterly dependable upto around 180k miles, but then other things can go wrong instead of the engine.

If she gets a good clean example, for a nice price, then she probably won't go far wrong. They are exactly as Annabella said, great on motorway, comfortable, and fairly cheap to run.

I'm on my third banger diesel, and I've sold each one for pretty much what I bought it for (I switch every couple years).

Got a Rover 620 petrol N reg, so far so good, very comfortable, enough performance and generally looked after very well. 2 series are ugly ugly things but 400s not bad. Honda engine - nice and reliable, couldn't say about the ancillaries. Also agree Citroen/peugeot diesel engines very reliable and perform well. Thumbs Up

Incorrect my TDI does easily 10mpg more than a 2 litre petrol.
