 |
|
I have a machine with Outlook Express. However, the folders contain a large amount of SPAM messages that have been downloaded. Does anyone know of any (free) software, or any other automatic method, to clean these (delete messages).
I have got a SPAM filter to delete direct from the POP3 mailbox but apparently hasn't been running (it's a McAfee one and I'm not impressed). My partner was being 'helpful' in downloading the messages. So I have a lot of clutter to clean.
If anyone knows of a decent SPAM filter for the POP3 mailbox as well then I'd appreciate the recommendations.
Thanks in anticipation. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I use Mailwasher. Works OK and it's free.
Worth a try. ____________________ GSXR600K4 Blue - fastest colour. No mods as yet. Happy with standard bike.

| Quote: | create some message rules and it'll filter out the crap. |
You'll be at it forever making rules to filter out all the spam out there, and if it's virus-based, then it's too late as by the point Outlook gets to working on it, it's already on yer harddrive. Mailwasher is the best solution available at the moment that I'm aware of, and works directly off the mail server without retrieving mails to your machine, thus deleting spam and viruses before they get to you and have chance to do any damage. Happily filters out over 4000 spam messages per day from my mailboxes without me having to feed it any rules or filters...
| Quote: | ive set my Mailwasher up to filter out emails with the word Medz, meds, pharmacy etc. |
Shouldn't need to setup a filter with Mailwasher fer stuff like that... if you get a large amount it'll bog MW down and cause it to use more ram as it has to then load up filter rules. Just go down the list of e-mails, click the trashcan button at lefthand side of each spam e-mail that it hasn't auto id'd as spam... it'll work it out and begin to flag all similar e-mails. Hit the Envelope button to mark mail as friendly.
Under SpamTools > Origin of Spam > DON'T set mailwasher up to bounce. That'll just line you up for more spam. Set it to delete instead. I have mine set to check against bl.spmacop.net and relays.ordb.org - tends to cover the majority. njabl.org also run a good blacklist server... if a bit over-sensitive.
Avoid manually adding senders to blacklist, and don't tell MW to auto blacklist senders. One blacklist gets beyond a certain number it can cause MW to crash / bog your system down, and it grows rapidly.
Don't enable SpamCop reporting... what you consider spam, others don't... can cause problems on quite a large scale...
On Learning page, tick "teach mailwasher....", tick "limit learning archive size" and set it to 4Mb per category-ish.
Under actions on same tab, tick top 2, and bottom one.
Recognizing Spam tab, tick all EXCEPT for Mark email for bounce, and "Automatically (without notification)"
On Recognizing Mail tab, tick all except for "mark sender of the email to be added to the friends list" ____________________ FAB-Racing MiniMotoSidecars - Back with a vengeance - F1 Class 2011...

Tools > Options > Summary tab.
Ensure Message logging ticked... set log number of days.
Ensure "Allow deleted emails to be restored from the summary screen" is ticked also.
Now it keeps a copy safe for restoring incase you've cocked up and marked summat legit as spam or missed something accidentally id'd as spam.
To restore deleted mails, go to Tools > Statistics > Mail log > Select email you want to restore and click restore, or rightclick and select restore.
RecycleBin can be emptied by going to Tools > options > summary tab > Empty the Recycle Bin. Then they're gone for good with no recovery option.
If there are folks you know for certain you want to always receive mails from (eg: family), then add `em to your friendslist. ____________________ FAB-Racing MiniMotoSidecars - Back with a vengeance - F1 Class 2011...

k... you're meant to run Mailwasher... this then logs onto server and displays headers of messages on server. You whip down the list, once you're sure everything is as you want, hit Process. That should then delete the duff stuff, auto-minimise Mailwasher, and load your e-mail software (Outlook Express etc) which will then download the cleared e-mails to your system and remove them from the server. ____________________ FAB-Racing MiniMotoSidecars - Back with a vengeance - F1 Class 2011...

FWIW remember to turn off the feature in Outlook/Outlook Express that goes checking your emails every x minutes (or whatever you set). Let your SPAM killer software, mailwasher or whatever, clean the mailbox then you get the messages when you want to.
Still wanting to know if there's anything to filter Outlook Express messages that have already been downloaded. Anyone? ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...
